What happens if you don't know if your really depressed and your put on antidepressants?

Today I went to the doctor to see what was wrong with me. I told him i can't sleep at night and I get bad aches in my stomach in the morning. He asked if i was depressed and I think I am. But I'm not really sure if I'm depressed or not. I know that I'm not in a severe depression and I've never really had suicidal thoughts. But he prescribed me a drug called Fluoxtine telling me that all my aches and insomnia are from stress and depression and it should clear it all up. I'm not sure if I should take these pills and I'm not sure that i Shouldn't. I keep psyching myself out the more and more i look into side affects and stuff like that. But what I really want to know is if I'm not actually depressed what will the drugs do to me? I've only recently opened myself up to the fact that I don't feel or act as as well as other people. Also I'm 17 going to highschool and if I miss one more day I won't graduate and if I fail any classes I won't graduate and the pressure is really stressing me out. Any information will help thank you

Speaking as a doctor and psychotherapist, depression often manifests itself in physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, etc. The below guides should answer your questions.

It would probably be a good idea to talk to your doctor about how you feel. If you aren't comfortable taking this medication it probably isn't going to work for you because if you aren't comfortable taking it then you aren't likely to take it regularly in which case it isn't going to work anyway. There are alternatives to prescription medication and you should discuss all options with your doctor. If your doctor doesn't want to discuss alternative treatments with you then go to another doctor. As a young person who may have a potentially debilitating condition you would be smart to get a 2nd opinion anyway.

The symptoms you have could certainly be from depression, they could also be due to an anxiety disorder. Who knows, maybe there is something physically wrong like a vitamin deficiency which is usually easily fixed by taking a vitamin supplement. You never know, the answer may be simple and painless. If you're aware of not feeling or acting as well as others appear to then you are two steps ahead of most people and have a better chance than most of finding a solution that works for you and greatly improves the quality of your life. Be determined and know that you deserve a happy healthy life, arm yourself with information and be prepared to work for it. The first thing you try may not work. Neither may the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Don't give up!! It might take some determination and hard work but you can get to a place where you feel better and enjoy life a lot more.

Don't beat yourself up if you don't meet every goal in life exactly when everyone else does or when you expect to. What is the worst thing that will happen if you don't graduate? Will you die? Probably not. Will all your hair fall out? Highly unlikely. Will your pet stop loving you? Certainly not. Ten years from now absolutley no one will give a frog's asss if you graduated late. They will care that you graduated. They won't even notice if you started college a semester or even a couple of years after you graduated high school, lots of people take time off in between. They will only care that you went. Sure it would suckk not to graduate with all your friends but in the grand scheme of your life it would be only a tiny loose thread in the overall tapestry, only a year or two from now you and your friends will barely remember. Life changes a lot after high school and things that seem to be of life or death importance now become very trivial as you grow older and take on all the responsibilities and freedoms of being an independent adult.

I know things can get better for you and I hope you take care of yourself and keep seeking answers until you find something that enables you to really enjoy all life has to offer. There are really good times ahhead for us all :)

There is a lot wrong here. You don't need that drug even if you are depressed... or you will go through a lot of health problems related to drugs later in life. They are very hard on the liver and lord knows there are enough toxins in the world just from breathing! You are not too young to start standing up for yourself where YOUR OWN HEALTH is concerned. Tell them you don't want the pills and see what alternatives he gives you. Then report back to me...LOL no I am no doctor but I am very aware that most health care today is given by those that DON'T- care that is.

I'm not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't do but when I took Zoloft I ended up with a severe rash that I needed antibiotics to get rid of and became Zombie like. I ditched the medication and saw a counsellor instead and am much happier because of it. Perhaps you could get a second opinion from another doctor?

What happens is there is not enough seratonin in your brain. So the anti-depressants just stimulate more seratonin. The medication will only remove the side affects, it will not cure the problem. What I would recommend is taking a depression test online or if you really think your depressed go see a psychologist :) Also some things that may lift your spirits would be running/Walking or finding a hobby that you enjoy. Hope this helps :)

Source(s): Use the effective natural core treatments for depression at * your-mental-health.8m.com and page B. If using a RECOMMENDED* brand of St. John's Wort, take with meals to avoid possible stomach upsets; check out the websites on St. John's Wort via page B, and if using UP TO 50mg of 5-htp daily in addition (or UP TO 200mg of 5-htp if NOT using the wort) take with a very low protein meal, to maximise the amount crossing the blood/brain barrier, with no, or extremely little protein 2 hrs before, to 2 hrs afterwards. Alternatively, take SAMe with the core treatments, but don't use anything else. View http://www.typeofdepression.org/Cause-Of-Depressio... & http://curetogether.com/depression/ig/treatment-ef...
