Why did Ben Franklin say this about Welfare?

“When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” —

Benjamin Franklin

Isn't voting for politicians who support social programs doing exactly what Ben Franklin warned us about?

Franklin said it because he wasn't profoundly retarded. It's OBVIOUSLY true.

Yes it is. And soon with the way things are going it will be more economically beneficial to not work and have the social programs provide your needs. But this will also end when no one works and everyone is on welfare, because someone has to pay taxes to support these program. And if everyone is on welfare who is pay to taxes to support it. California is a good example of voting in money, It is a good example of a state doing everything wrong.

That's just silly. Franklin helped design this country. He knows that people can not vote themselves money, but instead have to support candidates who will in turn get them money. In that case, its the people that have the power to give the most support to a candidate, that will get the money.

Hence why corporations and the wealthy are the recipients of the most government aid. They have the money to fund candidates and get votes.

No.....Politicians backed by special interest $$$$$, get elected, and then line their pockets from these people would be more of what I think he meant!! A congressperson or senator CAN actually vote themselves $$$$$ now. The Supreme Courts recent vote made this possible.

No. Social programs are not "voting themselves money".

For example, the post office. It takes your mail, and delivers it across the country for 50cents. Go to fedex, and it will cost you 10 dollars (exactly 20 times as much).

Now, Look out your window. See those things that the cars drive on? Those are called Roads. The goverment builds those as part of a social program, so that you can have a safe and easy trip to work and to the mall.

Do you want those gone too?

Because Franklin knew the nature of people and he knew that once we began to give entitelments for votes it would wreck the economy and our freedom

Or he could have been warning us about big business buying votes. Of course congress has always determined their own salaries.

True! If we don't change things very soon it will be "the end of the republic".

Politicians pandering for the votes of the lazy by guaranteeing entitlements is killing America!

That's why the 47% of Americans who pay no income taxes are screeching the loudest about taxing the rich. Every penny more that somebody else pays is one less that they themselves are expected to contribute.

And, yet, Franklin was the father of public libraries and public fire companies.
