Yes, once you are a child of the Father's you are always a child, but children can run away from home and be lost.

We become children of our parents when we are born into a family. Spiritually, we become a child of God when we follow the Biblical plan of salvation and are "born again".

Notice, however, the prodigal son. He was the father's son because he was born into that family, but he chose leave the father. In doing so, he left the privileges and blessings that belong to a son who has a relationship with the father.

While he was gone, his condition was that he was "dead" and "lost". (Luke 15:32) His being a son did not prevent him leaving a relationship with his father, and thus entering a lost and dead condition.

There are many verses that talk and warn christians about the dangers of temptation and the possibility that one can turn their back on the gift of salvation. 2 Peter 2:22 describes it as a dog that has gotten sour food out of his stomach returning to eat his own vomit or a sow that was cleaned returning to wallow in the mud.

The prodigal son left the blessings of living with his father to go his own way. When the son "came to himself" and repented (changed his mind about wanting to be separate from the father which resulted in a change of action), he was able to return to the blessings.

If we turn our back on God after we have been born into his family, we will also be turning our back on the blessing of salvation. If we turn our back on god, we are rejecting the only source of salvation there is. (Hebrews 10:26)

If this is our condition, we can change our mind and actions (repent) and return to where we belong.

"For if, after they HAVE ESCAPED the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are AGAIN ENTANGLED in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have KNOWN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, than HYAVING KNOWN IT, to TURN FROM the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” (2 Peter 2:20-22)

Paul said, "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified" . (1 Corinthians 9:27)

If it were not possible to turn away from God, then why all of the verses that speak of the dangers of temptation, evil company, growing weary or becoming discouraged?

Yes if you're an Arminianist (Hebrews 6:4-8, 2 Peter 2:20)

    No if you're a Calvinist (Romans 8:30, 1 John 2:19)

Both are supported in scripture. Yes, the bible contradicts itself.

    Yes, they can.

Jude 5, RS - “I desire to remind you, though you were once for all fully informed, that he who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, **afterward destroyed** those who did not believe.”

Matt. 24:13, ASV - "But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved."

    - Why would endurance be necessary if someone was once saved, always saved?

Phil. 2:12, KJV - "Why, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."

    - This scripture was addressed to the holy ones at Philippi, as a reminder that their salvation was not yet assured.

Heb. 10:26, 27, RS - “If we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.”

    - So the Bible does not support the idea that it doesn't matter what one does after he/she is "saved" as far as salvation goes. Faithfulness is necessary.

One cannot lose something they never possessed in the first place. The only kind of eternal life God gives is, eternal. He never changes His mind; He never regrets forgiving a truly repentant heart. However, anyone who willfully continues sinning after they claim to “believe in Jesus”, only proves their so-called repentance was either insincere or, most likely, missing. One who understands that Jesus’ mangled, crucified body was intended to show the punishment their sins deserved can never crucify afresh the Savior by continuing in sin once again. The genuine follower of Jesus may stumble into sin, but they do not remain in sin. Quickly, they will renew their repentance and trust in their Savior’s sacrifice, resuming their daily pursuit of proving their love for Him and making more certain their faith and repentance are real. Obedience and perseverance are the ultimate tests of those who will spend eternity with the Savior, and who will not.

    Yes. Jesus warned us to stand firm to remain in a saving relationship with God. From Matt 24;

At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

    Cheers,
