Groom at a horse show...?

Next weekend I will be attending my first ever horse show... and I wont be riding, but I will be a sort of groom. It's only a small show, and I would like to know what happens and what I should wear! Such a stupid question :P thank you!

Jeans, paddock boots and if your barn has a shirt or sweater that has a logo wear that. Stuff you don't mind getting dirty! You could wear you breeches (if you have some). What will probably happen is you will help groom the horse before that show (tack up, brush etc.) You may also clean the riders boots and make sure their riding gear is clean. (I have be a "groom" before too!) After the show you will untack and brush the horse, you might give it a bath but i don't think so because its geting quite cold! You kinda just fallow the riders around and do what they ask. :) have fun!

Sounds like fun! As a groom, you will do whatever the rider needs you to do, and that might vary A LOT. For example, I probably wouldn't let anyone saddle for me, because I am very particular about how it is done, probably the only thing I would let a groom do is take the horse back to the trailer, maybe unsaddle and/or unbridle, tie horse up, be sure horse had hay and water, and pack up the trailer for me. Others might have you doing most of the horse preparing and handling, tacking up, grooming (duh), and then take the horse to the showing person, in addition to the chores I listed. Most people will probably be in the middle. I ask the groom (at a small show) to help me keep track of class schedules, and write down what I placed. I show all-around, so that may be as many as 10 classes in one show.

Dressing will probably depend on what you normally wear. Most formal would probably be khakis and a polo, but jeans and a tee shirt would probably be good too. Boots, or at least solid sneakers/tennis shoes (whatever you call them). Maybe a ball type cap, especially if you have one with the barn's name on it.

In my real life, "groom" usually means friend or family member who came along to help out. Showing by yourself is difficult, and a helping set of hands really helps.

It's not a stupid question. You should dress for the weather. Layers are best so that you don't get too hot but still stay warm. Wear comfy clothing that you can get dirty. Comfortable shoes (preferably comfy boots) are best because you will be standing and walking a lot. Some sunscreen wouldn't hurt.

You will groom and maybe tack the horses so they are ready for their classes. You will help the owner with whatever they need help with. Brushing, hoof polish, tails, cleaning tack, and more depending on what kind of show it is. You might want to ask whoever is taking you what they have in mind.

When you get there, your rider will sign up for classes. You will grrom and tack up the horse. Your rider will warm up the horse and will show. You might need to do some tack changes. If you have a shirt or somethinhg with the logo of your stable or something on it, you should wear that. Wear it with jeans and boots. If it is going to be cold, bring plenty of layers. It is probably a good idea to bring an extra shirt, because chances are you will get slimed by the horse. Just observe everything and use this as a great learning opportunity.

If it's a local show - as a groom you won't need to wear anything posh.

Just wear something nice and comfortable, sensible shoes and be prepared to get stuck in.

Local shows are fairly easy to work out - most of the time you can enter on the day, you go up to the office and ask for a number and say which classes you'll be entering and pay - then be ready for the class to start on the time.

Basicly you will probably be helping a lot with horses, grooming inbetween shows, wiping off boots and hooves before entering the ring holding horses, getting water, filling hay nets, etc.

I have gone as a groom before for my cousin's, I got water, groomed horses, and basically everything that could get show clothes dirty or that they can't do like wiping off boots and hooves and holding horses while they were in the class if they had to go right back in with a different horse.

Wear something comfortable, but easy to be around horses in. Your jobs will probably be- braiding manes, tails and forelocks, dusting off the horse, putting show sheen on, etc. putting on hoof polish, helping the rider keep all his/her stuff together and not get too frazzled, dusting off boots, cleaning up poo, etc. :)

    Have fun!! x)

You should wear something comfortable and barn appropriate. You will probably be setting up stalls, bathing sanding/polishing feet, braiding manes/forelocks/tails if needed, brushing, feeding watering tacking helping the rider mount, you wouldnt want them to get dirty or split their show pants (happened to me once) stupid polyester. you would catch the horses coming out of the ring, untack them bathe them walk them out. expect to work hard. do a good job because you want your grooms to do a good job when you show.
