Do the Amish who have chosen to reject technology take aspirin? Get vaccinations?

If a Pennsylvania Dutch woman (Amish) got cancer do they not get modern treatment for it? Children of Amish with cancer? Do they just waste away from lack of modern medicine use?

The Amish do get medical treatment when they need it, even though there are no Amish medical doctors. They do have some contact with the outside world, including buying and selling things, as well as going to the doctor. In general, though, they live very self-sufficient lives and will rally around to take care of a sick person, so outside nursing needs may be minimal.

The Amish have not rejected all technology. They make decisions on this based on what effect the technology will have on family and community life. Since nothing in THIS world could be as precious as the life and health of loved ones, of course they will go outside the Amish if medical help is needed. They are generally hard-working and prosperous, plus they support each other, so usually they can pay the bills somehow.

They do tend to like natural methods of treatment better, if practical; but if they need an MD or hospital, they will go to one.

The do not assume or think that outsiders are evil or anything like that; but they place a high value on their own way of life.

PS: there are advantages; when there is an electrical power failure in the region, it doesn't inconvenience the Amish at all.

The Amish base their culture on their religious beliefs.Their attitude as a result is the devil makes work for idle hands and one should work hard(the bible condemns laziness). As a result, they do not value modern time saving goods. Its not that they hate technology; but rather they adopt technology only if it is something they cannot live without. The Amish are actually quite willing to adopt technology that will not effect their way of life- they can have surgery, some can fly on planes, on holidays they use bicycles, they adopted quilting with is now synonymous with them, they can use drills and even milking machines and use solar power and wind turbines. If the Amish church and her sibling the Mennonite church accept modern culture and modern technologies, their biblical way of lifes would be ruined. There are some "Mennonites" who did just that and they are all but Protestant in name. The Amish church is focused on tradition and children are taught that the church, then their parents are the most important in their lives. They value hard work, because the devil makes work for idle hands. If they embraced more technology like the Amish-Mennonites they would have less employment and would be tempted by the world.I do know however, some Amish-Mennonites who do use modern goods and some of them struggle with how much technology is enough and with wordly temptation. They do not fear modern equipment- they fear the effects on their way of life and on their religous beliefs.

I've seen some Amish people in cars here in Illinois, and shopping in Wal-Mart, so I'm sure some do utilize modern technology, but I don't know if that is the way all the Amish people are, or much about their culture, I would imagine they would seek help if they needed it though!
