USB Mouse doesn't work?
For some unknown reason, my usb mouse stopped working. I tried rebooting, no luck, tried add new hardware wizard, no luck, new hardware wiz doesn't even recognize the mouse is plugged in. I have a usb2 port plugged into the cpu which I plug the mouse into. I plugged the usb2 port into a different port on the back of the cpu. New hardware recognized other stuff plugged into the usb2 but not the mouse!!! I had an old mouse and bought this new one because I thought the problem was the mouse but the new one does the same thing as the old one. Hardware manager says the driver for the keyboard works and there are no probs with the keyboard, just the mouse. New mouse is optical, lit up and seems to be okay but cpu doesn't recognize it. Windows XP system, 32 bit. Please help!!!!!!!
Okay, when I said the 'cpu' I meant the box the computer is housed in. On the back of the box there are usb ports. I changed the port my usb2 device was plugged into. The computer recognized other devices plugged into the usb2 port when I moved it but it didn't recognize the mouse. It's a new mouse but it did the same thing with the old mouse (that's why we got a new one). So it's not the mouse because it did the same thing with the other one and it's not the usb port because the system recognized other devices through it.
Found the answer. Plugged the mouse directly into the tower and it works now. Go figure.

Try the mouse in another computer - if it works, then there's something up with your computer, if it doesn't it's the mouse and you should send it back if you only just bought it.
Also, is it a wireless mouse? If so, did you connect it to the receiver properly, following the instructions given by the manufacturer?

You can't plug into the CPU, impossible.
From what you have proved, ie other things work in the port it comes down to the mouse, but you say you have tried other ones. Have you tried an old PS2 mouse, You have to switch off to connect it.
Can you access the control panel via the keyboard, if so look in the mouse settings.
The CPU is a big chip on the mother board, what you're talking about is the tower.
