Would you buy from a breeder who intentionally breeds mixed litters?

There is a breeder in my town who is very well known in the area. Many well-known people in the area get their dogs here, including many athletes and TV personnel in the city. They're a large facility, which I don't in itself find offensive, but intentionally breed labradoodles, goldendoodles, and lab-golden mixes. Assuming they did everything else in a conscientious, responsible way, would the fact they breed mixed dogs disqualify them as a responsible breeder in your book?

Update:

I agree. People in my 'town' (St. Louis) talk about this breeder with such respect, and it really gets under my skin. So many Cardinals and Blues players own dogs from this breeder, and people are always asking if my dog is from this breeder. I personally don't think their breeding stock has anything great to offer to the breed, and the intentional breeding of mutts is shameful. I own a wonderful mixed breed dog (as well as a purebred lab) who I love, but know the science of genetics enough to understand that the doodles of the world aren't worth intentional breeding.

No. Absolutely NOT. They are breeding mutts and selling them for thousands. A *large facility*. Sorry. Churning out the mutts hundreds at a time? I don't care who buys them. TV personnel and athletes buying them does not impress me. Neither does it make it *right*.

These dogs are not tested. These dogs are bred for what purpose? Do these dogs have a PURPOSE? Such as retrieving/hunting/sporting/agility?

Why not just buy from a reputable breeder who stands behind their puppies and has done all the right testing and it is a BREED. Why settle for a Fusion when you can have a Mustang for the same price?!!

Yes, I am absolutely amazed that people are stupid enough to by "Designer Breed" mutts. In Australia many years ago scientists proved that there was no way to have a real Labradoodle or Goldendoodle, it simply can never come our 50-50 and will never be an actual breed, the dogs are mutts. I don't have a problem with mutts, I volunteer at an animal shelter, but there are already so many waiting in shelters that people need to be stopped from breeding them on purpose. I also handle beautiful purebred dogs in shows and when spectators come and ask where the Goldendoodles and Yorkiepoos are they are laughed at and I mean laughed at. People are so brainwashed by this new phase that they don't realize that a real breeder is one who uses their dogs in confirmation, agility, obedience, and more and also has all of their health testing so that they are breeding to better the pure breed itself.

Yes (it would disqualify them as a responsible breeder - not yes, I'd buy!!!). If only because deliberately mix-breeding, and hanging these ridiculous names on the results is only being done to MAKE MONEY. Nothing else. What they are doing is producing mutts - and they can use all the excuses in the world forward for doing this - it still won't persuade me to feel any different. There is nothing wrong with Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Poodles so why it's felt necessary to mess around with three perfectly good breeds is beyond me - other than TO MAKE MONEY. Given the effort some of these people are putting into producing these puppies, one wonders why they don't get hold of some really good specimens of the 'real thing' and set about producing a good bloodline, of a RECOGNISED BREED. That would make sense to me.

The rest is just a scam - using adults as ATMs.

ps If your local celebs. are buying into all this - they have more money than sense - which, of course, is the case with most of 'em.

No. Even though I own a mixed breed dog and have had purebreds and mixed breeds in the past, all of my mixes have been rescues of some type. The claims made by these breeders are false and there is no good legitimate reason to mix breeds. There are plenty of mixes from accidental breedings or from owner turn ins in shelters, there simply no reason to get a dog that way.

No, there is no purpose in breeding mutts. These people are propagating the lies of hybrid vigor which has been disproved in breed crosses. The myth that to beed a poodle to another breed makes the offspring hypoallergenic is just that a myth. The original experiment to create hypoallergenic seeing eye dogs was a failure the practice abandoned. However there are a couple of exceptions. The alaskan husky for example. These dogs are breed and crossed for a specific purpose for the use of the breeders and their inner circles. They are specifically bred for sled dog racing and have proven themselves superior to the purebreds. If I were to race in the iditorod I would purchase my dogs from one of those breeders.

No and no. Maybe that's why they keep breeding these mutts. People play follow the leader, and when well known athletes and TV personnel buy them, everyone else seems to have to have one too. Some people just don't care what they waste their money on. Since these celebrities are buying them, I'll bet this breeder sells them for even a higher price than $800.00 for a sinking mutt. Bet ya!

I know a great breeder by me who breeds schnauzers and poodles. She raises both breeds and on occasion has a litter of crosses...that were planned. We have discussed this question and dilemma time and again. Her rational is simple. People are wanting them and they sell. So is it for the money? I guess so. But, she does not overcharge for these crosses. $300-$400. Pups are backed just like her purebreds, they are raised out of show dogs with CH titles earned. Parents of both breeds are health tested. She says that selling this cross gives her the money to show her next dog etc since she feels people are falling away from purebreds. I, honestly, don't think it is up to any of us to disect a breeders intentions. I think if everything else is right who cares what they do on the side for a little extra money.

Beings I would never go out looking for a breeder to purchase a cross breed from...the scenario you mentioned simply would not apply to me. Yes, I would discard this breeder because I would want a quality Lab. Not a doodle or Ret. cross. However, if they have high quality breeding stock and health test and the dogs are not kept live livestock I would not call them a irresponsible breeder, I guess.

So if I were looking for a purebred and I found a breeder of that breed that I was pleased with in ALL aspects but they also cross the breed with another breed. I would probably still buy the puppy I was looking for from them. That would not rule them out in my book at all.

There are some people who breed these type of mixed breed dogs and for good reason. So the fact that they are intentionally breeding a mix breed dog does not make them a irresponsible breeder IMO. These breeds you listed are often good for people with allergies and many organizations use them to be trained as aids for those with a handicap but are allergic to dogs.

However the fact that you recognize that "They're a large facility" indicates they have recognized the demand for these types of dogs and are in it for the money , not for the love of the "breed" so in my first impression is that they are irresponsible.

I am sure there are allot of mix breeds in the world that are just as or more talented then full bred dogs, however I would prefer to get my dogs from a breeder that has decades of experience in the breed that I am interested in

No reputable breeder would sell mutts. They make up fake names like "doodles" and "poos". The research shows that most of the breeders who sell mutts are backyard breeders or puppy mills. The best place to get a mutt is from a shelter. Thats how I got my rescue dog. So my answer is NO.
