When singing high, I either lose my voice or get a 'choking' sound from throat?

When I start to sing high, I can't sing the normal volume. The volume is always too low, and no matter how much I try, I can't volume up. Usually, I can sing the comfortable notes any volume I want.

If I try the other way, to push my voice and sing the high notes the same way I sing the ones that I'm comfortable with, I would get a weird voice crack that definitely destroys my voice, a 'choking' sound from my throat.

I also have problems with confidence. In public, I can't sing notes that are just a bit high and that I KNOW I can sing when I'm home alone, when singing those notes my voice produces no sound.

Do not, Do Not, DO NOT put your chin to your chest when you sing! Your head should always remain level as though you were standing with perfect posture. It helps with breathing, too. Your body needs a clear shot through the windpipe so the vocal folds can vibrate. Tucking your chin will NOT help with that. I also doubt that it's your breathing, it sounds more like tension - raising of the larynx or something of that sort, so disregard that unless you can't sing through a musical phrase in your comfort zone without breathing multiple times.

There are a couple things that could be the cause of this:

You're not a soprano or you're singing with improper technique.

Usually being a soprano or not has very little to do with how high you can sing as long as you have proper technique.

If you're trying to sing classically, try to find somebody who will help you identify where your head voice is. If you're a mezzo-soprano (alto) singing high is not going to make or break you, and working on your tone where it's comfortable will help you sing higher as well.

If you're belting, you've got to be careful. Belting high notes is a practiced art, and jumping into it could have some serious consequences (like vocal nodes and polyps.)

Some ideas for developing this (some may help more instantly than others):

    - RELAX! If you're coming up on a high note, don't think about it being difficult or worry about how it sounded the last time you sang it. Think "this is going to be a piece of cake!" Singing should happen naturally, so please don't strain yourself!

    - Think that the note is higher than it is. If you imagine the note is a little higher, your placement will adjust to make more room for the sound. Don't try to do this yourself - it should happen naturally. Just think higher (like you're going to just drop down as gently as a feather on top of that note) and let it happen.

    - And if you're into it, you could always warm up your voice slowly by singing scales, etc.

Stage anxiety is very common. I used to have terrible worries and my legs used to shake uncontrollably and VERY noticeably, haha! The more I sang in front of people, the easier it got. And, as terrible as it sounds, it always helped me if I made sure to sing after somebody who was worse than I was. :) Now I'm the first one up to sing for people.

But really, the people who are up there singing like you feel the same way you do, and they only want support from their audience. If you're giving it you'll be getting it. And the people who don't go up to sing don't do it for a reason - They're too scared or they don't think they're good enough. Really...Who cares about the opinions of somebody who can't put their money where their mouth is? Not me!

    Good luck!

Hey, for the high notes thing.. maintain the singing posture... make sure that you're standing/sitting straight with your head straight in level with the ground... dont look down, rather look towards the ceiling.. it'll help u sing the high notes better.. works with me!

As for the confidence, just close your eyes, imagine that you are alone.. and just sing.. :)

First step is to be sure the way it feels once you're doing it wisely. Get a heavy e book, like a text cloth e book or a dictionary. Lay down on a flat floor that's no longer too delicate (the floor is stable, yet probable no longer your mattress). placed the e book on your abdomen. Then prepare respiration so as that the e book rises and falls. as quickly as you have mastered the technique laying down, it somewhat is time to stand up. the nice and snug button is to maintain your backbone right now from the top of your tailbone, each and every of how as much as the surprising of your cranium. this suggests you need to shop your chin down, so the back of your neck feels long and right now, do no longer carry your chin once you pick for top notes. shop your shoulders down, and comfortable, yet somewhat back, so your chest feels very open. you may ought to rotate your hips decrease than and forward, so which you experience area for the time of your decrease back. combine this with the top approximately your ft somewhat aside and knees somewhat bent, and you'd be wanting a stable base to assist your respiration. Your diaphragm muscle groups ought to enhance out and down, and you % to maintain that feeling of growth. do no longer enable it cave in, or that's going to shrink off your sound. the different muscle must be comfortable besides your diaphragm. stable success!
