How old is my parakeet?
I just purchased a parakeet (American Budgerigar) from PETCO (I know, bad me. bad, bad me), and I purchased him for three reasons: he's adorable, he looked healthy (bright eyed, clean feathers), and he was obviously young (bands down to the cere). But now that he's in his new home and I've had an up-close-and-personal view at him, he appears much younger than I originally thought. The bands are extremely prominent (completely black) all the way down to his cere, and his eyes do not have a hint of gray, they are completely black all around.
So I've been around the sites that are allowed through my school's filter system, and it seems that he is younger than 4 months old. I was wondering if there was any way to get a more accurate age, because if he is so very young, are there any special feeding/care options that I have to take care to pursue?
Thanks for the help in advance!!

When a budgie goes through his first molt at around 3 to 4 months of age, the barred markings on his head will begin to fade. From the information you have provided, I do not think your bird has gone through his first molt yet, making him around 0 to 2 months of age. He could be about 3 months, depending on when he molts. It is hard to tell if the bird doesn't have a legband. Usually a legband has either the month or year the budgie hatched.

HI,
Well there is NO way to be POSITIVE 100% sure, but for a better know, go to your local vet. they can test him and tell you a more accurate age. I am not a licensed vet so i can't but i would say with my knowledge on birds (i own two) he is about three months or two months. You should see this as a bonus for you! this gives you a wonderful time to teach him!! start now because now is when you can get him into good habits! as for eating, keep him on a seed and pellet diet, with greens and fruits and vegetables. HAVE FUNN!

it depends how long you've had it and how long the previous owner had it consult the person you bought it from and ask them who they got it from in other words trace its history back
