Who is the better driver Gordon or Johnson?

Jimmie Johnson just won his 5th strait championship and passed Jeff Gordon with 4 championships, but if it was not for the chase Jeff would have won in '04 & '07 and Jimmie would have won only in '06 & '09. So is Jimmie better than Jeff Gordon or his he only the best Chase driver?

Update:

To see how they would have finished with out the Chase and who the Champions would be from 1975 - 2003 if the Chase was in effect.

I still say Gordon is better because he won his 4 titles under a harder points system. Jimmie has had the gift of the points being reset with 10 races to go....Jeff didn't. And Jeff still has more wins.

Jimmie isn't far behind, but it is a fact that the Chase points system is easier than the old points system.....the top 12 drivers get a second chance now, when they never did before.

Jeff Gordon is a better driver and has driven under the real points system.

The chase is a joke, it has no road courses races in the chase and only shows who is best over 10 races.

How can you determine who is the best over just 10 races, you can't.

Lets say someone is 12th in the standings 700 points behind the leader but ends up winning the chase....Do you guys really think he is the champion?? It is going to happen one of these years where a guy is 12th at race 26. It's like the first 26 races of the season is all practice.

    Jimmie Johnson

I think right now Jimmie is the better driver. Simply put Gordon dominated in the mid 90's to late 90's and 2001. He was the best driver surrounded with the best team. Now Johnson has picked up where Gordon was, but has had far more continued success year after year than Gordon. Johnson and his team have dominated in the Chase year after year because they make few mistakes and capitalize on other's mistakes and get good finishes.

Both drivers will be the best during their decades: Gordon in the late 1990's and Johnson from mid 2006 to 2010.

I say Gordon,Johnson for whatever reason is given the whole support of 5,24,and 88 ,while the others are hung out by there selves.Plus 10 years ago they had drivers that would drive like a race should be run, instead of tippy toeing around the track and staying away from the 48 car.

jeff gordon is the better driver he won championships the way true champions did and won alot of races based on his ability to drive the car. jimmie is not that good of a driver i mean if you really watch him he never does anything spectacular in the car like jeff gordon had done in the past. chad is just so good that he always gives jimmie really good cars so it makes jimmie look good sorry guys its all in chads smarts to make the car so fast.

Gordon is still the better, more consistent driver. Johnson is just a product of a changed race format.

Jeff is the better overall driver, if the chase had'nt been changed, Jimmie would not have won as many

Jeff Gordon... He should have 6 championships by now. He has nearly 100 wins and hes not done yet.
