Why do so many girls and women idolize Scarlett O'Hara?

I think she was an appalling character. She owned slaves, she stole her first two husbands, who she didn't love, from their fiancees, and then treated them terribly. And she tried really hard to take another man from his wife. She really didn't care anything about anyone but herself and her house, and had no moral qualms about any of the things she did. So what's the appeal? And why don't people like Melanie, a woman who showed genuine courage and kindness and selfless dedication?

For the same reason girls and women idolize Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and others: they get their way, *despite* their reprehensible natures. Who doesn't want to be able to behave badly and get away with it?

There was a time when women, (and some men) thought that Cary Grant was the sexiest man alive. He was like Brad Pitt back in the '40s and '50's.

Scarlett is an archetype; all over English literature there are strong, willful, and spoiled women that need to be "tamed" by an equally strong, willful, man.

Women in Medieval literature were almost always portrayed as conniving b*****s that brought discord and trouble. Margaret Mitchell just carried that tradition on.

I dont really know anyone who idolizes Scarlett O'Hara, it is more like the woman who played her, she was beautiful and portrayed a strong woman, although, you are correct, she was way out of line LOL I think the exact way you do whenever I watch the movie. I think it may have to do with the romantic Victorian setting, not the woman.

Scarlett substitute into born at Tara. Her father is Irish, and that's the place the full speech approximately loving the land got here from because of the fact she is a million/2 Irish. He substitute into purely asserting how all and sundry with the smallest little bit of Irish blood in them has a deep connection with the land.

I think "idolize" is a pretty strong word. It's more like there are certain aspects of her character which are admirable. She was a strong woman in the face of adversity. Her character made for a mighty good read and a great movie. Leave it at that.
