tips for getting your gi clean and white?

here's one for the seasoned martial artists. specially those that have or had mothers and grandmothers

In a few weeks I have my first dan grading coming up and I'd like to look the part of course.

for this I'd like to make sure that my gi, and specially the jacket is as clean as I can make it. Both the gi's I own are round about 10 years of age. and as you all know after a while they just don't come out of the wash looking like in the washpowder adds no matter what you try. (makes me wonder who in hell decided to make these things white) so can any of you seasoned martial artists or not so seasoned ones share with me some of your (grand)mothers secrets to get your jacket looking like new again.

Have you tried baking soda in the wash? It's a natural cleaner, tends to leave whites whiter, and helps to remove old stains and fight odors. 1/2 cup in the wash when you add your detergent.

    Hope that helps!

I think bleach for a one time washing is fine as long as there is no black on your uniform. If there is don't use bleach. So, if there is black on it spray all the white areas that are dingy with Shout, that works good. For a major testing like this, I would starch and iron your uniform. It will make it look clean and neat and snap during your forms.

I don't necessarily recommend bleaching / starching your regular uniform. I like my uniforms broken in for training, and so I don't bleach / starch my training uniforms.

I would recommend to keep an extra uniform. I keep one uniform in my closet for special occasions, like testings / demos / and other school functions. It doesn't have to be a high quality uniform since it would be rarely used. A single weave light uniform is often sufficient for these purposes.
