Why do your teeth chatter when you get cold?
When it's really cold outside, and you shiver, why is it that your teeth start to chatter?

Your teeth start to chatter because of involuntary contraction and relaxation of the jaw muscles (the same principal as shivering just that your teeth hit together). This happens to keep us warm. This works because to move, voluntary or involuntary, we need to respire. Respiration is exothermic (ie it gives out heat) this excess of heat warms us up.
