My parakeet isn't chirping...?!?
I just bought an American Budgerigar on Sunday. Well since then I haven't heard him 'chirp' or 'tweet' or whistle or anything! The only thing I've heard out of him is a bit of a garbled sound. I know that he is a young little guy (around 2-3 months old), but I also know that baby birds tweet almost right away...so I've been fairly confused. And at first I was like: "All right, he's just nervous." But today it looked as if he was TRYING to make a sound and it just didn't come out. He opened and closed his mouth quite a few times (not a yawn), but no sound. So I'm a little worried....should I be?

It is normal for them not to make a noise for a few days to a week after you bring them home. Have you tried putting on a radio in the room. Sometimes that will get them chatting.

I have had budgies for almost 12 years and i can almost guarantee that he will chirp one of these days..just give him some time..most of my birds have chirped the second day they got here but then again I've always had more then one bird in a big cage sort of like a small avary so they feel more at home with company...since you only have one budgie its probably still afraid and wondering whether or not you are "safe" to be around.....talk to him in a sweet voice every day and he should get accustomed to you..also go to youtube and play some parakeets chirping for him and let him listen to it that almost always gets birds' attention whenever they hear another bird chirp especially if its a young one...if you don't hear any chirping for a week i would suggest calling a vet just to make sure nothing is wrong with him...good luck with your budgie...Oh and about the yawning, a lot of birds yawn its pretty natural to them it means that they're relaxed especially if you hear a little grinding sound they make with their beaks that means that they're really relaxed...when they're yawning really frequently and hang in front of the bars in the cage to try to get more oxygen then take him to a vet because birds' lungs are really delicate..if you have any airfresheners in your home i would suggest getting rid of them..the vapors are really harmful to pet birds...
