Yes, May 1961 was the month I reached age 18 - so memories of those days are very sharp, as are the 'pop stars' listed and many of their recordings.
Indeed, I'd bought records by Duane Eddy and also The Shadows (instrumentals) - Adam Faith and Bobby (Mack the knife) Darin. But most of the music fondly remembered relates to my Youth Club days (aged 14-17) when the likes of Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Perry Como etc were 'popular' to dance to.
"Those WERE the days, my friend - we thought they'd never end..." (sigh).

Hi Gerry.
Yes it brings back a lot of memories. I met Billy Fury when he was appearing at the Winter Gardens in Morecambe about that time and he was on tour with Marty Wilde. They had a white Ford Consul 375 which was covered in lipstick names by the fans.
The top of the bill was Al Read, famous for his monologues, and he had a pink Chevrolet Impala parked behind the theatre.
I don't suppose any youngsters remember him?
There was also a show on the central pier where the King Brothers were appearing.

Never heard of Billy Fury but I do remember the Hit Parade. I never spent my money on magazines in those days. I spent all mine on records. I had hundreds of 45s and about 100 of LPs. But I remember seeing stuff on TV and hearing about the "Hit Parade".

It was a hoot to see Benny Hill's name on the mag. I don't remember the guy on the cover, But I recognized everyone else except one. I never missed the hit parade. I remember two really long running songs that seemed like they would never go away. The first was Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford and the other was Running Bear. I don't remember who the artist was on that one. I don't care what anybody says, those were better times.

Oh yes it does, happy, happy memories.
I went to see Billy Fury at Batley Variety Club many years ago and loved every record he made.
I also bought a cd a couple of years ago from from a small village shop that sold collectables.
Thankyou for bringing back some wonderful memories of the sixties.
All of us on here sound so appreciative of those past times, I feel very fortunate to have lived through those wonderful musical days.
Many thanks.

What a lovely photo of Billy Fury, I thought he was wonderful and bought all his records, it was shame that he died so young of heart problems. I always went to see him live when he used to visit the Winter Gardens at Blackpool, he was wonderful in his live shows as he is on his records. Thank you for the walk down memory lane, it was a good year 1961, well it was for me.

I used to buy the "Hit Parade" magazine quite often when I was in high school. I don't remember Bill Fury, but I may recall who he was upon doing some online research.

yes gerry, i remember Billy Fury, but have to admit for once that i was very young at the time, maybe 5 or 6, but my older siblings were mad about him. May i add that the sisters fancied the pants of him, and the brother loved his music. lol. changed days, eh?

I hadn't yet noticed movie magazines much in '61. I remember those listed down the side of this one, but my little life at 14 in the 9th grade was still tiny. Thinking back to '61, though, does play scenes of JFK, still vital and active, and the way life went along pretty predictably.

He was one of my absolute favourites in the charts of the 60's and I used to wait to hear him sing on TOTP and other music programs on the TV before going to the coffee bars with friends and play the music on the juke boxes. I didn't have a record player or radiogram, so we used to listen to him on
radio luxembourg and the juke boxes and he was certainly in my top 10. Fabulous voice and looks. I was extremely upset when he died at such a young age.. I remember all on the list, but he was the best.
