Panasonic DMC-FZ35 or DSLR for aspiring photography student?
My daughter, who's 15, is interested in photography and she wants to take some classes in school or elsewhere later this school year.
I know that she probably needs a dslr but I don't have the cash to get her one right now. I was thinking about getting her the Panasonic DMC-FZ35 since it gets reviewed as having very good manual options as well as raw, etc. If she really is serious about photography is that camera sufficient or would it be better to wait and try to find a cheap dslr somehow.

FZ150 has received slightly better reviews than the SX40 if you look at the regular review sites on the web. See the web sites listed in the 'Source(s):' section below. Both are very good and I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. The Canon has more reach, but the Panasonic is faster to focus, with a faster continuous burst mode and 50fps full HD video compared to 24fps on the Canon. The FZ150 also has a better LCD, shoots RAW and has a hotshoe for attaching an external flash or microphone etc. I would pick the FZ150, but the Canon is also very good.

Get her a secondhand dSLR. That's what I gave to each of my two sons, 14 and 11. The FZ35 won't do it. The controls won't be as wide ranged and as accessible as that of a dSLR.
