A simple question but i don't know the answer?
I am thinking of buying some side lamps and on the website it says the maximum size bulb you can use is a 7w ses energy saving lamp. If i put a 14w energy short spiral lamp in them would it cause any problems??

W means Watts. watts indicate the load on the electrical device.
If it calls for a max. of 7 watts then 14W would be too much and hazardous.
If you need brighter light then you need a lamp that is built to handle greater wattage.

Typically Electrical Equipment or Fixtures have a sticker from UL / Underwriters Laboratories, this is the agency which tests and rates electrical devices for safety. The label lists the levels at which they have been tested, in this case the lamps have been tested up to 7W and is deemed safe. Anytime you exceed the recommended Watts you are subjecting the lamp to an untested level and perhaps unsafe conditions (Fire or Shock). If you want a brighter light I would suggest a lamp which will support the higher wattage bulbs. It is all about safety!
Good Luck,
Robert

YES it will cause problems - the rating is there for a reason - that is it is the safe maximum, using a bulb of a higher wattage will cause excess heat and will damage the lamp (or you) - go buy some 7W bulbs.

Well you can read the label informing you to use a 7 watt bulb and now you want to put a bulb with twice the wattage in your lamp. Why not step back and think it over.

Increasing the bulb size will increase the heat to the lamps shade, this may make the shade melt or if the shades are metal will cause them to get very hot and likely to cause a burn to your hand if you touch them, or even worse may set fire to soft furnishings ie curtains etc if the shade came into contact with them, or gets too close.

You would be doubling the amount of voltage that lamp is rated for. Don't do it, you'll only risk getting something hot and ruining your lamp and blowing the bulb.

yeah I would think it just wouldn't fit or work. so regarding light bulb sizes, I would get the exact size the lamp calls for.

I would say it's not about the size of the bulb but the heat created so I wouldn't risk it you might find your home on fire.
