My pitbull started limping. She still runs and plays fetch with me but when she walks she limps.?

I've checked her toes and toenails all the way up and down her leg squeezing and pushing in different spots and pulling on it and nothing. She is a lil over 8 months. She plays tug a war with me jumps up and down like it don't bother her but when shes just walking around the house or the backyard she limps on it like its broke or something. What can it be i noticed her in the backyard a couple of weeks ago doing it but it was just for a couple of steps, I figured she just stepped on a sticker or something. She doesn't limp all the time but it's more and more here lately. I'm taking her to a vet but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem with their dog doing the same thing.

There could just be a splinter or something, or maybe a sprain.

I don't want to worry you, and i doubt this is the case, but i had a golden retriever and when she was about 7 1/2 she started limping and we didn't do anything about it for a week or so because we thought it was just temporary or a splinter... The limping continued for a while and we took her to the vet and they did some tests and got back to us a week or so later and confirmed that she had a cancer that was quickly spreading. We either had to take the risk or amputating her leg, not knowing if the cancer had already spread farther, or just letting her live out the rest of her life and allow her to die of natural causes. We we pretty sure the cancer had already spread because her other leg was beginning to look odd. Last month she passed away.

My advice would be to take your dog to the vet as soon as possible so they can examine your dog and get a head start on fixing the problem.

*I don't mean to worry you!! I certainly hope that your dog only has a mere sprain!!!

    Pitbull Limping Back Leg

  • 1 decade ago

Could be a pulled muscle or soreness from too much playing. You can rest her for a few days (keep her in a crate or laying down, no frisbee, ball, or long walks/runs). It'd be best to have her checked out by a vet though. Puppies of this age tend to not know when to stop but usually they are young enough that they bounce back without any problems. It's my 10 year old dog that limps after too much activity, when she was younger she could have played all day without any problems.

The more running and jumping she does the worse it will get. She needs doggy bed rest until she stops limping. It could be pano which is like growing pains in children since she is a puppy and still growing and again it may not be. A trip to the vet. may be called for if she doesn't improve in a couple weeks with total rest.

I would say hes injured himself at this age if he were older it could be arthritis and the cold has aggravated it if it is temporary try some ibuprofen other wise you should take him in to have the vet check it out. I have seen other dogs do this in the snow and rain because they don't like the weather and they try not getting their feet wet As always the best way to be sure is a vet visit. First you need to inspect the leg and foot for any cuts or swollen areas. Keep him warm and dry good luck to you both

A few years ago my dog (adopted pit bull mix) was limping for no reason. Took him to the vet and they even took x-rays and found nothing wrong. Then they did blood work, and it turns out he has Lymes Disease (despite having the vaccine, apparently its only less than 50% effective). Good thing I took him to the vet right away, because they said if it goes untreated it starts to harm the liver and kidneys! He took some pills for a few weeks, and was feeling better after only a few days of meds, and is totally better now. Someone who adopted one of my foster dogs (a purebred APBT) told me she tore her ACL a few weeks ago. It was pretty much the same sounding symptoms as well. But lucky for him he took her to the vet a few days after it happened and she got the surgery to get it fixed soon enough so there is little chance of further problems.

It's probably injured, not broken, but maybe a stretched or torn muscle or sprain.

Pit Bull type dogs have a very high pain tolerance. Sometimes they will be injured and show absolutely no signs. The urge to run and play is stronger in your dog then the urge to nurse his leg.

The vet will be able to help you.
