Making WiFi work in Coffee Shop?

Local shop bought router/modem, has ATT service, is not sure login is loaded in new router/modem, internet led is off, there is no PC on site. Internet led @ home does not come up w/o pc on. Is PC required on site for ppp0e connection. It's a netgear box, do not have model number. I spent 27 years fixing some complicated stuff, never did much on the comm side though. Need confirmation I came up with correct theory or new idea.

Update:

Thx, netgear book not on site or I would have brought it home to isure password was installed.

Does anyone know if PC is required as my home modem Internet led does not come up w/o pc on..will not have access to the book til Sunday

Okay your question is hard to read but i think i understand you ^_^.

If you want to set a ppp0e connection up you can take the router home and use your PC to enter your ISP's setting. You can then take the box back to your coffee shop plug it in and you should have internet access. If you are not sure of your settings phone your ISP and ask for them. Your net gear manual should have the instructions you need to preform setup.

Turn off SSID on your computer (what you're seeing is other people's SSIDs which means they are openly broadcasting it -- bad for security). If you have encryption on your own laptop then you can safely use it without worry on coffee shop wifi and other public networks. That's what I do too, since it is automatic.
