Do you finish a book you don't like?

When you're reading a book, and you realize you don't like it, do you finish it anyway? I don't.

Update:

No motive, I'm just curious.

I always used to until about 3 years ago, when I was reading a book that I really did not like. I found I didn't care what happened to the characters and I was becoming increasingly irritated by it. Then I had the most amazing idea -just stop reading it!- and I did. Since then I've done the same thing with 3 other books. Life's too short and there are so many wonderful books waiting for me to read them. (I'm 56 & have been reading 2 books a week since I was 11)

It depends. I will continue to read something poorly written if the story is compelling or a mid level story if it is extremely well written. I won't read garbage just because the author has written other things I liked (This is, unfortunately fairly common as many authors, once they are established just repeat the same thing over and over with dwindling skill as time goes by, Piers Anthony and David Eddings come to mind). With some authors I have finished even even horrendously written books if the story is fun but I will never pick them up again ( Dan Brown.) I have, on occasion thrown out a book half way though the first page beaus of a particularly egregious literary sin.

There is not a one size fits all answer to your question.

Yeah, definitely! Normally, it's one-third or one-half way through, and by then all the characters have been established, the plot has direction and back stories are beginning to form. We may be learning something about the most mysterious character's past. So, why wouldn't you? So much learnt; so much to be learnt...

Though it's not the content that I hate, per se. I'm not a story hater as I meticulously choose what I want to crack open. The one thing that irks me so is writing style - I hate TEXT BOOK writing style. What English teachers consider to be a healthy dose of description I consider an Olympic swimming pool of detail. It annoys me SO MUCH!

Though I love flashbacks. I'm a SUCKER for flashbacks. Even if the book sucks, I'll be happier to read it if there are flashbacks.

I hope this helps, whatever your motive behind the question!

I think I've only actually quit one or two books in my lifetime, but I typically just pick good books that my librarian and online reviewers liked and were relatively similar to a type of book I previously liked.

No, books I don't like are hard to read. When they are bought book, I try to continue reading as I hate wasting money, but like I said before, it's hard.

    Honestly, it depends.

I only stop reading a book when the text has too many plot holes, grammatical/spelling errors, enormously cliched, Mary Sue/Gary Stu character(s), narrator intrudes too much, love is instant, "half" characters (ex: half angel, half demon or whatever)...

I should have made a list. xD

  • Actually when I do read a book , I will finish it whether I find it likeable or not
