  • What does “the colour slowly changes from 14 to 23” mean?

It’s a lyric in the title song from the 1968 film Skidoo, in which Carol Channing extols the virtues of free thinking and embracing the grey areas of life.

My guess was that it had something to do with colour TV (given the era) or LSD (given the content of the film), and there’s always that expression “23 Skidoo”, but I’m not sure.

Music and lyrics by Harry Nilsson, and it’s on Spotify and Youtube if you want to listen for yourself (but it’s Skidoo/Goodnight Mr Banks, not Skidoo/Commercials).

  • Having trouble with my new laptop and Windows 10?

So I got a new Lenovo laptop, and was offered the free Windows 10 update. Naïvely, I jumped at the chance, and now my life is hell. My laptop more often than not falls into this "mood" where the desktop files won't load, the only library folder that opens without sitting there on "working on it..." is Pictures, and Microsoft Office applications (I think I have 365 - the uni gives it out for free) just sit there loading without ever getting there.

Sometimes the desktop stops responding (which is horrifying, because it's the desktop), and I can't access many things in settings, like Windows Update. iTunes works. Troubleshooting turns up with zilch.

    Can anybody help me?

    Please and thanks in advance!

  • I was wondering if anyone knew who these people are in this photo?

I found this photo on Facebook around the middle of the month but I seem to not remember anything regarding the names or circumstances of the people in it:

    https://31.media.tumblr.com/6d9461b67ea6d9eeff30e4...

I *think* their jackets say something about an "Australian Sport Commission", and "FINA" in the background is an international swimming federation, so I figured it might be a bit of a big deal. The medals aren't anything recently Olympic, but apart from that, I don't have anything on them.

ANY help would be appreciated - recognition of which country/event the jackets signify, what event medals of that description are from, ANYTHING.

    PLEASE and THANK YOU! :D

  • What do I need to do to become a tutor?

My friend and I both achieved the highest possible band of marks in the H.S.C. for our French (Beginners) course, and as we are both continuing our French studies this year at university, we figured a wise thing to do would be to put our language skills to good use and tutor HSC students.

We want to start an "unofficial" business that we can accredit to the both of us - the logic is that we'd have a central Facebook page to manage it all from as well as our emails and mobiles - and, come graduation, I'll have plenty of experience on top of my pracs with which to begin my teaching career, and Olivia will also have a boost from her primary school teaching degree.

I'm also taking German as my minor, so after a couple of years, we can add that as a service.

We were thinking we'd just charge the median of our ages - $18 an hour - as we're just starting out, but, beyond all that, we don't really know what to do or where to go.

    Should we hold group sessions?

Do we go to their houses or do they come to ours?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

  • Warped dimensions when editing pictures on PowerPoint?

I like to edit images and such for my Tumblr, and I used PowerPoint 2011 to do so. But whenever I crop or resize or add an effect to an image and then save it as a .png file to upload, I find myself needing to go into Paint and resizing it as, having saved it, either the length or the width have been stretched 125% or so.

This ONLY happens when it's just the picture on its own. If I group a text box or other pictures into it, it's perfectly fine.

It's just really annoying and I'd like a quick, permanent fix to this. :)

  • How to get Blu-Rays to play on a Compaq?

So I bought myself a movie on Blu-Ray today because they didn't have it on DVD in the hope that one of our players would be able to play it, but silly me, none could.

So now I'm trying all manner of things to get it going on my laptop, a Compaq with no Blu-Ray drive.

In fact, it's not even acknowledging that there's a disc in there at all!

Is there any way I can get around this problem with some free software off the internet or whatever else?

Any help would be appreciated. :)

  • How can I get over the fact that my crush has had a previous sexual experience?

*This is JackFinch's friend, so don't go calling him gay and stuff*

So I'm in my last year of high school and I like this guy and he's really hot and cute and smart and nice and stuff, but... he's, at the very least, done stuff with a past girlfriend.

Just FYI, he's been through like a bazillion girlfriends back in his immature days, and one of them always ends up sucking her boyfriend's d**ks. All of them. And that's the only sexual experience he's had... that I've managed to dig up (JackFinch did some poking around for me, and that's all he could find too, and he's pretty good!).

I've never had a real boyfriend. I've gotten as far as little kisses and stuff, but I've never given head! And I just can't get over the fact that he's gotten it in the past. It's frustrating, because I really, really, really like him! :\

It's not that I think I'm going to be inexperienced and unimpressive to him because of that. I can't explain it. It's like... I feel uncomfortable knowing that somebody else has done that with him.

What do I do? I really want to get past this, but I get emotional and obsessive over the littlest things.

    Help, please!

    Thanks, guys. :) :) :)

  • Laptop keeps overheating and hibernating?

So, two days ago I got The Sims 3: Supernatural (on a disc) and Plants vs. Zombies (from the internet) onto my laptop, and now, whenever I play The Sims 3, the laptop will go black and into hibernation, telling me my laptop has overheated.

This has NEVER happened before. I've had this laptop since either last Christmas or the one before - mum and I can't remember - and it's never ever overheated. All the little grates on the bottom look clear, and I can hear the fan, so that covers two signs I've read about.

It only ever hibernates whenever I'm playing The Sims 3 (except for one instance about an hour ago when it happened during Plants vs. Zombies), so I figure it might a memory thing, because games aren't the smallest of processes.

Are there any little bits and bobs in the software I can turn off to accommodate the games, or some cheap solutions I could look into?

    Many thanks. :)

  • What are some stereotypical Jewish sayings?

I'm writing a play for my Drama class, and it's a bit of a melodrama. The characters are just downright stereotypes, with one of them being a Jewish aunt that's come to stay with the main family.

I need some little phrases she can toss around, like "be a mensch" or "mazel tov!", to really bring a sense of tacky authenticity to her character.

    Many thanks in advance! :D

  • Why does my right nostril start bleeding whenever I blow my nose?

I've never been a nose-bleeder. My friend used to get them all the time when we were six or seven or so, but I never ever got them.

This year, at the age of sixteen, I've been getting them EVERY time I blow my nose - I don't need to blow it often, but, when I do, there's blood... but only out of my right nostril.

At first, it was your average nosebleed - 5-10 minutes of sitting around and waiting for it to stop with a tissue up my nose - but, today, I blew my nose twice (once in the morning, and once in the afternoon) and the "flows" were slightly heavier. As in, the tissue got redder quicker and it took longer to go away. The afternoon bleeding also managed to elicit a minor flow from my LEFT nostril.

What could be happening in my dear old nose? I've read of such things as weak walls inside the nose, or blood vessel problems, or even trauma caused by pinching the bridge of your nose.

    Any ideas?

  • Are there any DS or GBA games where you play as a ghost?

And, you know, jump around possessing people and whatnot? I've never found a game like that, and I was just wondering if there were any out there.

And no-one suggest Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, 'cause I've finished that game. :)

    Thanks! :D

  • Are all the Gen. V Pokémon original?

I mean, are they connected via evolution to any Pokémon from the previous four generations?

    For example:

Between I and II, Magmar, Electabuzz and Jynx gained pre-evolutions (Magby, Elekid & Smoochum).

Between II and III, Wobbuffet gained a pre-evolution (Wynaut).

Between III and IV, Roselia gained both a pre-evolution and an evolution.

And let's not forget Mr. Mime (I) getting Mime Jr. (IV).

Are there any instances like that in Black & White Versions?

  • Why can I only download so much of a torrent?

I've tried three or four times to download a certain torrent, and it ALWAYS stops on 9.3%. There's even a comment on the page I got it from saying that it stops there for other people, too.

How can I get around this?

  • My eye's a bit blurry?

It's been like this since I woke up this morning (I'm 16, by the way, so don't go suggesting I've got some sort of adult or elderly person problem!). At first, I thought something was in my eye, like gunk or some wateriness or something, but it just wouldn't come out.

When I shut the good eye, I can kind of see two of all the words I'm typing. When I shut my blurry-ish eye, everything's perfect.

I've never had problems before - in fact, I've had perfect vision my whole life.

  • Anyone got a good list of CODEBREAKER cheats for Pokemon Emerald?

For some reason, my No$GBA emulator can only take Codebreaker codes, but I'm struggling to find the codes I want, so if you could either find a list of codes for me or offer some sort of Action Replay/Gameshark to Codebreaker code "translator", I'd be very appreciative.

    Thanks in advance! :D

  • What language is this and what does it mean?

I was browsing through some music online, and came across this - "Miйnk az йj". It's a song from West Side Story (obviously, in another language). Google Translate got me nowhere - it kept insisting that it was German, clearly, it's not.

    Could anyone help me? :)

  • When was Murder, She Wrote set?

I'm writing a murder-mystery play for my Drama class major work, and the protagonist and setting are going to draw heavily on Murder, She Wrote. However, I haven't the slightest idea as to when it's set.

I understand it aired from 1984 to 1996, and, as I've seen no definitive date, should I assume that's when it was set? Any help would be appreciated! :D
