installation of Office 2010 fails?

Downloaded Office 2010. Before it installed reported that a install of Office 2003 was corrupt and needed fixing before this could proceed. I did have Office 97, Frontpage 2003 and Publisher 2002 installed. Also an automated response from the vendor said I have to remove all versions of Office before installing this. Now the uninstall using the normal Control Panel feature of each of these crashes the computer. I found that Microsoft has a FixIt tool to remove Office 2003 programs but it crashes itself. Any suggestions? Thannks

Update:

The two answers below that suggested

The FixIt in that note was what ultimately worked. However, with the programs that had locked up the computer during normal Uninstall, I had to reinstall them and then let the Fixit find them and do the uninstall. For most programs the Control Appwiz.cpl did not work.

It sounds like you've already seen the link below.

First try to repair your existing programs to see if you can then uninstall them. If that doesn't work, try re-installing your programs from their original source disks then try to uninstall them.

It's unfortunate that in the link below Microsoft says they've discontinued the use of their Windows Installer Cleanup utility due to problems. I've used it several times and not had a problem. You might try locating it on another site and try it. It will delete a program's data from the installer database. All you'll need to do then is manually delete all program files, shortcuts and menu folders.

Personally, I would recommend you use Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to uninstall the software.
