Baking Soda & Peroxide home teeth whitening?

I am an ex-smoker and a lover of dark sodas (I have a Dr. Pepper addiction) and have recently realized the damage this has done to the color of my teeth. I cannot afford to have them whitened professionally so I started doing some research into at home methods. It seems that a very easy & inexpensive way is to make a paste using baking soda & peroxide. I've read many articles and questions about this but still have unanswered questions.

How often & how long do you do this? I see some places say it is harmful to your enamel to use too often while others basically say it replaces typical brushing with toothpaste twice daily.

Also, if you have any experience with this technique, how soon did you begin to see results?

Like Hannah mentioned, diet is one way to truly change not only the appearance of your teeth, but probably also your body physique as well. I'm not gonna tell you that you HAVE to give up soda (I love Dr.Pepper and Mountain Dew and Cappuccinos as well lol) but I'll give you a few hints on how to change the look of your teeth.

---Brush regularly. ( You prob. do this anyways, but make sure to do a thorough job.)

---Try to limit your intake of the dark colored liquids, but I understand it's not as easy as it sounds =)

---Find some Baking Soda (any kind will work, but I used Arm & Hammer) and sprinkle some on a wet toothbrush, and brush your teeth with that for a few minutes, making sure that you really 'scrub a dub dub' your teeth lol. You won't exactly hurt or damage your teeth by doing this, but you may feel a slight burning sensation in your gums, but thats normal. Do this everytime you brush your teeth, and even maybe once in the middle of the day if you have a few spare minutes. I didn't really see a big difference after doing this for a few days, but I'm sure it helped prepare my teeth for the whitestrips.

---Try at least a couple products from the store, such as Crest Whitestrips (cheesy I know lol you've heard this SOOO many times probably lol) but trust me, they work! The work wonders. I used mine three summers ago, and I still get compliments on my white teeth. They're not AS bright white as they were, but they look like more natural white instead of celebrity white. Get what I mean? Haha but they have a new kind out, the 3D White, they are THE BOMB!!! They NEVER slip off your teeth like the regular kind I had, did. They would be all slimy and slip of the teeth and gums, but the 3D White actually stick to the teeth. I had to PULL on them to rip them off.

I was in the mall parking lot in my car trying to get them out lol the people next to me were like WTF?! lol

Anyways, I used mine for about a week. I found that they were TOO sensitive on my teeth (the Professional white kind, NOT the 3D White, which didn't bother my teeth AT ALL) and I had to use them everyother day once a day on the second week, but I just barely started my second week and had to stop because my teeth were kinda aching and were really white.

The new 3D White didn't bother my teeth at all.

P.S. I got one free sample of 3D White with my 3D white toothpaste, which is why I'm mentioning about using the 3D White :)

---Use whitening toothpaste, but remember that these won't make your teeth any whiter, it'll just help keep them the same whiteness that they are. Crest 3D White toothpaste is what I use, and I recommend them.

For A Final Note, people will usually come up with, or believe in, anything that they hear. Such as "If you use a tanning bed, then you're bound to get skin cancer." Or "If you use teeth whitening, then you'll have no enamel left and have sensitive teeth your entire life." Come one peeps, your so gullible! In reality, YES, you are increasing the risk in those areas, but your not exactly signing your life away lol. Keep in mind the risks that are at stake, but don't solely base your decision and/or judgment on what others say. Anything in excess is bad for anyone (even water!) but when things are done in moderation, then it can actually be beneficial to the body (such as tanning beds giving the body necessary vitamins, etc.)

I actually spent like 25 minutes writing this for you, so I hope you take this advice seriously, and I hope you use these methods, and get the look you've always wanted! I'm sure I missed a few things, but I believe the Main Points are in there.

Have a GREAT Holiday, and Happy New Years!! ;-D hopefully you'll be able to show off your white shining teeth, and people will envy you haha ;-D

Peroxide is absolutely not safe for your teeth - it permanently destroys enamel, causing cavities and making them even more discolored over time. Baking soda as well can be quite harsh on the teeth.

Store whitening methods use concentrated amounts of peroxide and really are not safe to use either. They only temporarily create a whiter appearance by stripping the enamel that may have become discolored, but after awhile, the dentin underneath shows through and your teeth become even yellower.

The best way to get whiter and healthier teeth is through diet, believe it or not. To follow a healthy diet full of omega 3 and avoidance of sugar and flour. Also, use enamel strengthening pastes with flouride (don't swallow flouride). You can also ask your dentist for something called MI paste.

Try eating apples too, the natural pectin cleans your teeth (but make sure to wash your mouth with water after or you will get acid erosion). And of course, brush, floss and drink a lot of water.

You can also try a method called "oil pulling" - this is a safe home method that claims to whiten teeth, though I haven't tried it. Try googling this for more info.

Stay away from the professional teeth whitening procedures and from the whitening at home kits. They are using extremely toxic chemicals that can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO TOOTH ENAMEL and premature tooth decay.

Check out this site: http://www.naturalwhiteteeth.net/ - It's about how you can whiten your teeth 100% naturally. Same results but 100% safe and 1000 times cheaper.
