Do small sites require grids for geophysics?

Possibly a bit of a long shot but im doing a mock excavation proposal for a site here in Ireland and i've chosen a fairly small site to focus on but while im confident that it requires resistivity and magnetometry surveying i've no idea if a grid is needed.

Any ideas?

You would almost certainly need a survey grid. All the standard pieces of geophyscial kit (Bartington Grad 601, Geoscan FM256, Geoscan RM15, etc) are designed to collect gridded data and would be awkward to use without some sort of grid in place.

Some attempts have been made to integrate GPS survey kit with geophysical sensors, thus allowing the simultaneous logging of data values and spatial co-ordinates, and so doing away with the need for a survey grid. But this work is largely at an experimental stage, and I dont know of any such apparatus which is widely available and suited for use in small sites.
