The 54th Massachusetts was the most famous all black regiment in the Union army. Their heroism at the battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina is legendary. This frontal assault by 6,000 federal troops on Morris Island, South Carolina, July 18, 1863, was led by the 54th Massachusetts who suffered great losses including their colonel and organizer, Robert Gould Shaw. 246 federals died and 36 for the Confederates died. The stubborn defense of the Confederates caused the planners to change their tactics on the attack of Charleston.
