What is wrong with my 96 Ford Contour?

I've dealt with this POS for 6 months and it's always one thing after another. Last couple weeks the car has become sluggish. Sometimes jerky when accelerating, sometimes it dies. Yesterday I went to move it into the garage and it started up fine and ran better than it has for weeks!! Still has a check engine light on says Bank 1 is running lean. I have repaced fuel filter, spark plugs, as well as other parts that shouldn't affect this. Is it fuel pump or MAF sensor? I thought if it was fuel pump it would not have improved over time, but only get worse.

Update:

Already replaced O2 sensor. I don't think that should make the car die though even if it was the problem

A bank 1 lean problem is usually caused by a bad O2 sensor. Have that checked out by a good mechanic. A fuel pump or MAF sensor would affect both banks. I'm assuming that it's a V6 engine since you say bank 1.
