Syncing some itunes songs to an iPad.?

Is there a way to only sync some of your itunes content to your ipad? I have some songs and shows that I want on itunes and my ipod, but I don't want to transfer over to my ipad. Is there a way to do that without manually checking and unchecking songs every time I want to sync a different device?

Thanks.

Update:

I have a macbook computer, if that matters.

I usually just create seperate playlist/s specific for each device in iTunes and just check that playlist under the device's syncing options
