Robert the Bruce, or Robert I of Scotland (reigned 1306-1327), was the first son of Robert the Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale, and Marjorie, Countess of Carrick. His father's grandfather, Robert the Brus, 4th Lord of Annandale, was the son of Isobel of Huntingdon, the second daughter of David of Scotland, who was the son of Henry of Scotland, who was the son of King David I of Scotland (reigned 1124-1153).
Although Bruce's grandfather, Robert the Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale, tried to claim the Scottish throne, his claim was rejected in favor of John de Balliol's. Thus, when Bruce murdered Balliol's nephew, John Comyn (who had a slightly better claim to the Scottish throne) upon the high altar of the church at Dumfries, Bruce shored up his hereditary claim to the Scottish throne, even though he was excommunicated for it. Edward I of England supposedly reported the offense to the Pope.
Tanistry limited royal succession in Scotland to the male line of the House of Alphin until 1015 during the reign of Malcolm I. Malcolm, M*cbeth's sidekick, introduced hereditary succession, but just who should be King of Scotland remained relatively murky at times until Robert the Bruce's descendants through his daughter Marjorie and her husband, Walter Stewart, began to inherit the throne.
It's comparatively easy to keep track of Robert I's paternal male ancestors since most of them were named Robert. Similarly, the Stewart/Stuart kings until the reign of Charles I were all named James.

How could you be related to Robert the Bruce in the 1550's, he died over 200 years before that, his dynasty wasnt even on the throne of Scotland in the 1550's. Mary, Queen of Scots was the monarch at that time.
