Correlation between religious nations and armed police officers?

Here in the UK, our police officers do not routinely carry guns. We also have a high percentage of Atheists. From my limited understanding, the US is a "Christian Nation." which would indicate that they are more moral than us immoral British Atheists. So, why do US police have to carry guns whilst British police do not? From what I see on the news, images of Islamic countries almost always portray someone with an AK47 or an RPG slung over their shoulder. Would this indicate that these too are not as morally correct as they would have us believe.

If the US only has 2% Atheists (not sure of accuracy of this statistic), then why would a Christian want to own a firearm? Surely with only 2% of the population being immoral, the chance of being attacked is slim to none? By their very design, firearms are designed to put holes in living organisms with intent to change them into non-living organisms. This doesn't sound very moral to me.

Update:

@cheir - It would appear so. British police officers by tradition do not carry guns but I recently watched a video that made me think about different nations, their religious majorities and violent crime.

Update 2:

@ Trish - Care to explain? I don't think that Americans having guns displays any inferiority complex but I could be wrong.

Update 3:

@ Generic Skeptic - You're right that correlation is not the same as causation. It is just an observation that here in the UK we have a larger percentage of Atheists but less violent crime. No doubt there are far more variables other than religion involved.

Update 4:

@ The Wolf - I did not say that the UK was un-Christian. However we do have a larger percentage of Atheists than the US. I'm not saying that we do not have violent crime either, just less than the US. Our authorities do not "allow" criminals to carry firearms (do you realise how soppy that statement was?) whilst preventing law-abiding citizens to carry firearms. Just wondering why a Christian or Islamic nation, each with their own versions of commandments, would require armed police when a multicultural Britain does not.

Update 5:

@ The Coach - I'm inclined to agree with you. Not so much about the police protecting the "haves" from the "have nots" because there are many "have nots" who are "have nots" because they do not act immorally with intent to become "haves". As an American Christian, does it not bug you that others that call themselves Christian bring your religion into disrepute with immoral behaviour? I do believe that most US Police do "protect and serve" without discrimination. I wonder how people reconcile their faith with their actions.

America is at war with itself. The government and the rich verses the poor. This is why you see police officers with guns in every city. They are there to protect haves from the have not's. The U.S. military does the same thing for America's rich in other countries. The notion that America is a "Christian nation" is a fantasy created by those in power to pacify the poor and afflicted masses. You are right, America does not behave very well morally because it is NOT a moral nation. It just professes to be a moral nation. The American government has hijacked Christianity to cover it's tracks. The individuals that really comprise Christianity and other faiths should not be confused with the actions of the leaders of the evil empire in which they reside. Also, I am sure the are millions of Americans who claim to be Christians but live their lives as if there is no God. If you consider this fact, then I'll bet America has way more Atheist than Britain.

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. I thought it a might strange that you believe the UK to be non Christians, I am sure my friends will be shocked to find out the are non Christians.

There are over 80 million law abiding firearm owners with over 280 million firearms in the US that do not commit crimes. It is the scumbag criminals that commit all of the crimes in the US. Cities that ban the ownership of firearms in the US have the most crime, and cities, counties, and States that allow their law abiding citizen to carry concealed weapons has the least crime, so you see it is not the firearm that commits the crime or even causes the crime to be committed, it is in fact the scumbags criminals we have.

So tell us why you have so many firearm crimes committed with sidearms when all pistols and revolvers are outlawed in your un Christian country? It seems the way you look at things that since all pistols and revolvers are completely ban from the citizens and other firearms are highly restricted that you should never have a crime committed with a firearm. But as usual your murder rate has went up since the UK banned all pistols and revolvers, and highly restricted all other firearms. Is that because more Christians are migrating to the UK, or is it because the UK bans the law abiding citizen of the UK from having firearms, but allows the scumbag criminals to have them?

    Correlation =/= Causation.

I think American police carry sidearms because it is traditional and enables the officer to respond more rapidly and effectively to armed perpatrators.

Also, more recent data puts us American atheists around 8% - 10%, and the total irrelegious around 16%.

I think the issue is more about tradition and law enforcement than morality.

P.S. : Please excuse any typos and mispellings, I'm trying to type all this on my phone.
