Why is the water level in the sump pit lower than the level in the holes in the basement floor?

Help! The sale of my mother's house did not go through because of water problems in the basement. The sump pump is not coming on, probably because the water isn't coming into the sump pit. What can go wrong in the pit of the sump?

Update:

The pump is working very well when the water level is high enough for it to kick in. Water is not feeding into the sump pit. When the local hardware guy drilled some holes in the sump barrel, water came pouring in...but it stopped and another flood occurred.

TO CHECK THE PUMP - The pump will have some kind of float on the side of it. Lift the float to simulate rising water to see if the pump is working. If not, test the outlet for power. If there is power the pump may be shot.

Since you don't have water overflowing at the pit I would say the pump is fine.

If you have a "French drain" and the water is not getting to the pit then the pipes may be clogged and you may have to snake them out with a drain auger if possible.

    Additional:

OK, sounds like you don't have a french drain and the holes he drilled just relieved some of the water under the slab. You should look into adding a french drain and get a few quotes. If you can't afford to do it before selling the house you can offer to deduct the cost from the final sale price and the buyers would be responsible to have it done.

enable's seem on the anatomy of the drainage device of your basement floor. previously the floor is poured, trenchs with drain pipe are layed sloping down to your sump, having suggested that crammed with gravel. the main in all probability criminal frequently could be a crack interior the wall from hydrostaic tension build up interior the floor outdoors the homestead. This normally is brought about via failure to suitable direct gutter and roof runoff faraway from the homestead. some distance away. yet you're saying you have not any crack interior the partitions. Are you advantageous? do not enable the dry drywall fool you. Pull up the carpet in case you have it and consider! shrink a 6 via 6 inch hollow interior the drywall in the process the rain experience to analyze if there is any way this could be authentic. in any different case, you have a clog in between the drain pipes. this could be via tree roots. Do you have any timber sufficiently previous to get in there? if so, you elect some severe roto-rooting of your initiating drainpipes. they are able to be "roto-ed" from the sump pit lower back, with a bit of luck. Oh, final element, i'm assuming the flooding in basic terms happens throughout rain events, because of the fact if not, it truly is plumbing correct (broken grant or waste).
