Honda Shadow Regulator/Rectifier Problem?

I have a 2005 Honda Shadow 600 VLX Deluxe. Went for a ride one day, got off and when I got back on the battery was dead. I jumped it from a car with the vehicle shut off. It fired up and ran, but horribly. Backfired, wouldn't idle, barely made it the 1.5 miles back home. It sat for a while before I finally ordered a new battery because it was close to the end of the season. After putting in the new battery, it continued to run horribly, won't idle, very hard to start and basically nothing at the low end (first 1/4 of throttle). Did I burn up the regulator/rectifier by jumping it or does this sound more like a carb problem that just kind of happened to coincide?

Yeah,,,when that SINGLE Carb goes outa sync,,,,You KNOW Ya got Serious Probs.

Right or wrong,,,Gaurdrail Jim is CORRECT.

Low Voltage/Bad Battery will foul plugs very quickly,

They are cheap & easy to replace.

When troubleshooting you've gotta eliminate Possibilities and Variables.

Plugs are Both.By any measure,,,Fresh Plugs are the best place to Start.

Beyond that,,, Coincidences Do happen rather frequently.

It Could have a bad Reg/Rect>>which lead to initial Batt Failure>>>and you're still left with Low Voltage.

Jump Starting from a Car would not Likely trash the rect/reg.

Depending upon how long it sat,,,,you Could also have some Carb,Clogging,,,or water in the fuel

    *Plugs First step

    *Check Charging System Output

*Drain Carb(observe what comes out)also clean tank petcock screen

*Carb MIGHT need dissasembly & cleaning

    Good Luck

the bike takes NGK - DPR8EA-9 Plugs

All of the above are good to try but also look at if you get gas recently when the problem started? Water in the gas can make it run like complete crap if run at all. The Carb sync is exactly something that goes bad outa no where, that would be one of the last things i would do.

The dead battery might just be 1 of 2 problems,

Clean and do a sync on the carbs. Thats what it sounds like to me. Maybe run some Seafoam through it before tearing it apart and see if that works for you.

    Install new spark plugs.

The weak ignition from a dead battery can foul the plugs.
