Looking for someone who knows about kites?
Looking to buy my son (25 year old, lives in Virginia Beach) a kite for Xmas.He knows nothing about kite flying (beginner) I have seen on the net a number of kites from, 2 string beach kites 6 to 7 foot in diameter ($75 to $100) to large single string kites ($35 to $50) or stunt kites ($50 to $100). Don't want something to difficult or to simple. Any help would be appreciated.

For a 25-year-old, I would stay away from large single string kites. They are "set and forget," nice enough to watch but kind of boring after a few minutes. Two-line "power kites" have no connecting rods to break, but large kites and high winds need an incredible amount of strength or they can literally carry someone away. Small power kites need higher winds, and that could leave him waiting for wind.
Stunt kites, with a little practice, can be lots of fun, can have a fairly wide wind range, and if he wants to pursue the art, it can involve skill and finesse that takes years to perfect and can result in a continual "ballet" in the air. It could be a gift that will last a lifetime. He may want to start with an Addition by Premier kites, very versatile and tough kite, or a Beetle, also tough and responsive. He will also need good spectra lineset and straps, w/winder, I'd go with around 100# test, maybe about 80' to start. He will crash, and he doesn't need to be walking so far to set it back up. He'll need a screwdriver to secure the straps in the ground while he's walking back & forth, at least to start. If he has a special someone to help him, it's a great date! Good luck, hope he enjoys whatever you buy for him.
