How do you get dreadlocks and take care of it?

I just want to know how to get them and how i keep my hair clean. My hair is curly some parts curlier than others, is about 3 inches long. i just need to know how to get them and what kind of creams i would have to buy to keep it and wash it. Thanks for all real answers.

Theres different methods to getting dread locks all methods are proven to work (free-forming,comb twist)ect.you need to make sure you wash you hair really good, then blow dry it til all of it dry, then your gonna want to get them in section you can do it yourself but its a lot easier to have some on else do em since then can see what there grabbing when sectioning and how thick they should be doing it,don't make them to big because they get fatter before they start do dread up, but they go back down to size, because it getting tighter when it locks, you should start of with knotty boy or Jamaican mango and lime wax,(if you hair is not resistant use gel).use hair clips, you can pick up at a hair product store,(the clips are to keep the twist in) so you want to pull a section of you hair WAX/GEL the root all the way to the tip, don't over use the WAX/GEL (if you doing them your self one finger size should be a good size to start with and twist tightly and put the clip at the root and near the tip.(do that to every twist)if you have some on doing them for you they can latch a comb on the twist and twist that section tightly and use the clips the same way.

when your hair is done use a blow dryer or if you have on sit under one for 20 mins(this melts the WAX/GEL in the hair to keep them in),i kept my clips in for a full day,you don't have to,i just wanted to make sure they stayed in,when you sleep use a nylon(stocking cap) when sleep this keeps your in place while sleeping,(you hair will unravel don't worry its supposed to happed) i used WAX until my hair stayed together when dry,(you don't want to use WAX the whole time it leave a lot of buildup)after you hair starts to stay together start to use gel(WAX is only used on resistant hair that wont stay together with gel like my self).DO NOT wash you hair the first time til about 2-3 months and use a nylon(stocking cap) while washing this keep you dread twist in place.when you start of you may need to Re twist every 2 weeks but that depends on you daily lifestyle and how you take of them, hen they start stay together a little better, start re twisting every month or so.

Your roots are the last thing to lock up, don't get impatient, now when you dreads start together and there starting to get a little thicker and puffer no more WAX,use GEL(most people do this to keep them really neat all the time)once my hair started it locking process i only use the product on my un dreaded part mostly my roots, and left the matted part alone to keep them dry so they can start locking up the natural way from this point on.so either way will work,Time varies some people take yrs and some people take 5 yrs to get fully locked, the most crucial thing with having dreads is having patients, and well good maintained locks. also pick up Jamaican mango and lime NO MORE ITCH SPRAY trust me it will come in handy that will be you best friend(make sure to wash you had real good you don't want you dreads to stink.(MAKE SURE YOU USE RESIDUE FREE SHAMPOO)

Knotty boy, Jamaican make and lime,DreadheadHQ all these products work great for dreads,
