Have U2 and REM got anything left up their sleeves?

Both are featured in a couple of music magazines as having new records out next year, but will their new albums reach out to a new audience or will they play it safe and go for 'rock by numbers'?

Update:

I've seen both bands live a couple of times and have got their back catalogues, but where once a new REM album would be met with excitement and great expectation, these days it barely registers...

U2 are slightly different as new albums usually mean live shows, which is where they earn their stripes...But it's the shows that get the column inches and reviews, not the album....

Being a long-time fan of both bands, I'll definitely give them a listen. Although, I think their best albums are behind them.

    Fave Album:

    U2- Achtung Baby (1991)

REM- Automatic For The People (1992)

I know U2 is wanting to release 3 albums next year.

One is supposed to be a more rock based and produced by Danger Mouse (Guy from Gnarls Barkley). They've played some of these songs live.

Another one is supposed to be a club album with a bunch of different people on it like Will.I.Am and some guy who has worked with Lady Gaga... I have no idea why this is going on hahaha.

And the last album is supposed to be songs from the Spiderman Broadway act. But Larry and Adam don't really want to make it haha. They have also played some of these songs live.

I have know idea about REM though sorry. I'm a big U2 fan.

Two of my favorite bands there. I haven't really heard anything by REM lately that just stood out to me. U2, however, I do believe have exceeded the expectations of many. Their 2009 "No Line on the Horizon" is one of my favorite albums by them. They are just one of the most creative bands ever! Their new is going to be great. If you don't think so, go to youtube and search for "u2 mercy" which will be one of their included songs on their newest 2011 album.
