Complaint: My neighbor keeps turning off yard light!?

The houses on my block each have a tall lamppost in the yard. They're timed to turn on from dusk until dawn, and the block looks nice when all the posts are lit up. But my neighbor's lamppost is never on and he repeatedly turns mine off!

At first I thought the wind was loosening the bulb socket, so I tried securing the cover with new bolt nuts. But a few days later the bolts were missing!

My neighbor apparently is not allowed to smoke in the house. So, he smokes cigars on the front porch or in his car. And because he likes to smoke and drink in the dark, he always reaches in and twists off the light bulb to my lamppost! His lamppost is never on.

I don't think I'm being petty or unreasonable here, b/c I really don't mind him turning off the light while he's outside. I just want him to turn it back on when he's finished! I have asked him nicely (twice) to do that, but he NEVER does.

btw: This guy is 43yo and still lives at home with his mother! Got the picture here? But the mother and I have a very good neighborly relationship. She's cool!

So, how should I handle the situation?:

#1. Continue to remind him again.

#2. Tell him to not touch my lamppost at all.

#3. Report the situation to the other property owner-- his mama!

#4. Wait it out until spring. When I landscape the front yard and porch, I'll buy a new "tamper-proof" lamppost.

Any other suggestions, please?? I've lived here now for 4+ years, and I never have a problem with any of my neighbors. I'd hate for this minor issue to escalate and get blown out of proportion.

Instead of replacing the whole light fixture just replace the bolts/nuts with tamper proof design. Much cheaper than a fixture and problem solved. If you live in the US there is a company called "Fastenal" that sells tamper proof bolts and nuts.

Plan A: Set you laws sprinklers to go on when a motion sensor detects movement near the lamp post. Set the sprinkler to turn off after 30 seconds.

Plan B: If Plan A doesn't work, add a powerful flood lamp on the eave of your house and add another motion sensor hidden in the bushes near the neighbor's porch. Set it to turn off after 10 minutes.

Plan C: If Plan B doesn't work add a speaker on your roof beyond the tamper range of the neighbor. Connect it to a music systems which is turned on by the same two motion sensors. Find out what kind of music is the most hated by the neighbors and play that along with the sprinklers and the flood lamp.

Plan D is probably illegal, so I won't describe it. (It involves a smoke detector and a bucket of paint.)

Tell his mother what you plan to do and assure her that this is all harmless fun and you love her and would not do any permanent harm to her son.

I guess it all depends on how bad you want the light on. It can be very difficult to fight with neighbors, and will add stress to your life. I vote for talking with him and his mother, then putting a tamper proof lamp post in the yard (if talking doesn't work). Always start with the easy solution, then move to the more extreme.

Do the other neighbors know about this kook?

    Be confrontational.

Tell him in no uncertain terms to stay off your property. If he does it again, tell him that the police will be called.

Who does this clown think he is?

Tell him that if he takes it upon himself to trespass again, that you will have him arrested for trespassing, then do it. I would not tolerate this for a second. It's crazy.

Run an electric charge through the lamp switch.

TELL HIM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND TO STOP. THEN VIDEO TAPE THAT LAMPPOST.

    CATCH HIM RED HANDED.

CHARGE HIM WITH TRESPASS. THAT WILL STOP HIS ACTIONS..............
