is a 50 gallon filter to big for a 10 gallon tank?

I know its a bit much but the filter i want only comes in a 50 or 80 gallon and I plan on getting a bigger tank soon. Will it work until I get a bigger tank or is it just to much?

I always have double filtration on all of my tanks but if your getting a bigger tank soon i would get the bigger filter and then if you upgrade you can use that filter in your new tank

also look into what fish your getting the bigger filters have more flow that smaller filters

I'm in the same situation. I'm stuck with a 50 gallon filter in a 10 gallon tank. I have a lionhead and I hope he adapts to it tonight since he's usually quite at night. The fish is still small 3 inches. I'm planning to go for a 60 gallon in 2 months. Does anyone know if the fish will be okay until then? thank you

It will work for your tank until you get a replacement, Can you turn up or down the flow? If you can I suggest you turn down the flow. If you tank is overpopulated it might be better to have a stronger filter to keep things clean depending on the fish you have. We have Koi which are very dirty fish and have always had to have a bigger filter than tank.

depends on your setup - are you keeping fish from fast flowing streams? I would just wait on purchasing a new filter until you have selected the tank you really want and thought about what you are going to put in it

I say go for it. I don't think you can overfilter a tank too much, especially if you're upgrading soon. However, I would reduce the outflow if you can so there's not too much flow in the tank.
