Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Have you paused at all to think about it?
I was born in 1972, so it really has no real significance in my personal life. My parents weren't even born. But as I sit here at my desk it see it marked on my work calendar, and only then did I take the teeny-est second to think about it. I wonder if the flags are at 1/2 staff and if "the day" has truly lost its significance in today's world. Do you know anyone who fought in WWII? Your thoughts please.

Yes, I have thought about it.
Pearl Harbor was a HUGE event in American history. It finally brought us into the war that much of the world had been fighting for several years. And that war had a mssive effect on America: it launched us into superpower status.
I don't know anyone who fought in World War II very well. Like you, I was born well after the war ended (1980). My paternal grandfather fought in Italy, but he died before I was born. I consider myself a World War II buff, though, and I have read quite a bit about it.
In fact, now that I think about it, I think I will re-watch at least part of Ken Burns's film "The War" tonight. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
By the way, yes, the flags should be at half staff. It is traditional for each state's governor to order this. I am sure all of them have.

To be honest, I find V-E and V-J days more important. If anything, then 6th and 9th August. The day is still very significant, but not as a casualty; more like when the sleeping giant finally decided to wake up.
Let the thumbs down roll on!

Everyone would have paused for a moment in remembrance of the event and those killed that day. My father did not fight in WW2 as he was reserve occupation but both my maternal and paternal grandfathers fought in WW1.

Yes. My father served in the U.S. Navy In WW I and, though he tried every trick in the book to enlist in 1941, was too old (Also could not have passed a physical due to injuries). Several of my relatives fought in the ETO during WW II.

My dad didn't fight in World War 2, but he was the cook for the infantry. My grandpa fought in World War 1, though.
