Christians, is there any reason that you might "leave" a church?
Not questioning my faith. I am happy with my church. But I didn't EVER go back to a church that had a teen male visitor who was dressed shabby: jeans with holes in the knees & a band t-shirt on, long hair & an earing. When an usher noticed the kid (maybe 16) he got red in theface & told him to leave & put on some "decent clothes before coming into God's house". That kid is probably atheist today.
I was 15 when this happened & now I'm 37.
To those of you posting: "that's not right" well duh. The question is what REASONS would YOU not go back to a church.
To Bob: Glad to know you're back in church!

Believe me if he is atheist today that usher will have to give in account of what become of him because of her actions. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of All Mighty God. Don't condemn the church because of her. Remember the devil goes to church. Leave the church when the preacher stop preaching the truth.

I've left a church for another a few of times.
In a way, though, I understand telling someone to show respect. That kid was probably an atheist then, to be honest, and making a statement in the Church. Even at 13 I knew to dress better than that when going to service.
A good reason to leave a Church is if they are becoming corrupt in their leadership (i.e., commercializing God or taking advantage of their congregation somehow), or if the theology of the Church doesn't fit you.
I left my first (Lutheran)Church because of the former, and my second (nondenominational) church because of the latter. I'm now United Methodist and happy
EDIT: I'm not saying I agree with doing that. I don't think God cares about clothing. But by how you describe it, that person was disrespectful anyway. I go to Church in a t-shirt and jeans all the time, but it can only go so far, you know?

Ya, I was probably that kid. It's nice today that I wear decent clothes to church, but also nice that we as christians have come to accept all people into God's house. How is a homeless person with nothing supposed to "Clean up" before coming to church? They can't really, but they have just as much need for God's message and to worship as anyone else. The kids in all the churches here wear jeans pretty much, they feel comfortable and welcome. I wish they were as welcoming when I was younger I might have stayed.
Last week the pastor gave his sermon while wearing jeans. My wife did think this was a bit wrong as he should know better. To me, God's message has no dress code, it is in the words spoken and how they are acted upon. A persons financial status or lack of nice wardrobe does not exclude them from God's message or worshipping Him.

I leave a church only for these reasons: I've never got a reason why I should continuë since I only started going because I was curious, It seems a waste of time when I can worship at home, I see no need to continue church, I AM the church and Jesus never commanded that we attend a church building anyway. He said that he will build his ecclesiasta, meaning, a group of people in one accord. He said worship God in spirit and in truth. He never appointed the Catholic Church to continue the 'work' of Peter. He basically told us to meet with friends in Holy Fellowship.

My family members have left churches before if the majority of the people do not agree with them. That seems to be the only reason.
Source(s): Shabbily dressed atheist, lol Edit: I also forgot to mention that my old youth pastor dressed like that to be more 'hip'. Our dress code got really lax with him, and if I had stayed I know I would have been much more comfortable like that. - Anonymous1 decade ago
Im sorry to say but that is just rude. He was trying to get rite with god probably i mean what if he doesnt have good clothes for a church? that sounds like liberalism 2 me and ooh it irritates me.. im not putting this out on u im putting it on the church i would have complained about that..

Guess that usher never read a bible. All of the Christians in that church should have left with him.

Well, I would definitely leave if that ever happened in my Church but it never has that I'm aware of. If that usher considering himself a Christian, he's sadly mistaken.

i would leave if something like you described would happen. if the believers in one church started thinking only for themselves and not about God then yes i would leave. and you should be able to come as you are to church because does it say in the Bible you have to wear nice clothes to church to get to Heaven? no.

Matthew 23 ; verse ; 16 ; wow to you blind guides who say, whoever swears by the temple it is nothing; but who ever swears by the gold of the temple, he or she is obliged to perform it;
do you not know that he who does his works fore man to see that he has his reward ! i tell you if a homeless man comes into any house of my father and he only has one dollar to his name and gladly gives it , he has given more then a man that is dressed well and gave one hundred dollars! fore he has given all that he had ! he would be forgiven first before the rich man!
