Have you stayed at the Grand Canyon?

I'm going to Sedona and the Grand Canyon over Christmas for a couple of nights and am looking for a nice place to stay. I already have lodging for Sedona....but nothing for the Grand Canyon.

This is to celebrate my husband's and my birthday as well as our wedding anniversary so someplace special or unique would be awesome.

Thanks!!

The closest place you will find to the Grand Canyon, without actually being on the Grand Canyon, is Flagstaff. It's about an hour away from the canyon. My wife and I stayed there (don't remember the hotel) and didn't take long at all to get to the canyon. If you want to stay around the North Rim (less populated side) I would suggest Kanab, Utah. Again, it's about an hours drive but it's a quiant little town and if you are into animals, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (home to rescued animals) is there.

Man Christmas is kind of the busy season in the Park

If you can get one, the cabins with the fireplaces that are adjacent to the Bright Angel Lodge are really the most romantic lodging in the Park

Personally I would call the front desk at the BA from Sedona and see what's available

The problem with committing to staying at GCNP in winter is that you will have days when weather conditions like snow storms make the Canyon disappear .... often for days at a time

    http://www.weather.com/outlook/health/achesandpain...

More than one tourist has made an incredibly long journey to see the Canyon only to discover that weather conditions prevented them from seeing the Canyon

When that happens they tend to cancel or shorten their stays which then makes the space available for people such as you.

You know that regardless of weather you can always find a decent place to stay in Flagstaff or Page AZ

Another good option is the Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation

Since it is on the Rez you can't buy alcohol But you can bring it with you

    As far as another poster's suggestion of staying in Kanab and visiting the N.Rim goes;

In winter the N.Rim of the Canyon is closed to anybody who isn't willing to hike ,snowshoe or ski in and when they do get in they will find that all the facilities are closed

Yes. I've stayed at El Tovar at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Awesome. Just steps away from the rim. But you have to book rooms (applies to all rooms at the rim) in advance. Here's a link to all the rim top hotels:

If you are looking for things to do at the South Rim that will make your Grand Canyon trip super special, consider taking an air tour:

    Airplane

Both offer sunrise and sunset flights (very romantic).
