Stylish non-hybrid car with a good MPG?
I like sleek cars like those convertible 2-seater mercs/bmws, spyder, corvette, etc. and i am big on being environmentally responsible. however all these cars i said above are too bad on mpg. can anyone suggest a car that looks sportsy and trendy that would give better than 30 mpg on highways?
PS: I am not looking for sedans like camry and civics. thanks

The best one for your money is going to be the Mazda Miata.
It's fun to drive, gets good gas mileage (28 mpg highway) and it's going to be the best convertible for the money.
The Mini Cooper convertible is the only one I am aware of that gets over 30 mpg, but unlike its coupe counterpart, it has received horrible reliability reviews.
Same goes for the VW Eos - great looking vehicle and good mileage, but a crap car and expensive to fix.
If you want to wait a short while, the 2011 Ford Mustang convertible V6 is rated at 31 mpg, highway. That's the convertible I would want.

I am thinking Sebring, but I do not know if you want a style or the performance, is hard to get both for less than $60k.
The RX-7 is a sweet and styling ride.
The Hyundai, I know, not what one would expect, yet is getting admirable reviews across the board.
Honda CR-Z is also sporty.
For the pure enthusiast a two seat coupe is a dream. My choice would be the Audi TT, the bad is Automatic trans only, the good is it is Audi . AWD and is Audi.
The Mazda MX-5 is also a sweet one.
If I were to buy a new sports car, the Mazda MX-5 would be the choice, it has retractable Hard Top or Soft Top in the design. Best of both in one rather inexpensive sports coupe.
Could always go classic, a 1974 TR-7 or something like it is not only a styling and fun ride is also an investment, if handled properly.
The 30mpg is where the problem is, since the Model-T in 1909 most internal combustion cars avg 20-25mpg or so, some better with proper driving habits, some are phenomenal off the showroom floor, after 3 years of driving the mpg drops to the 25-27 mark.
Better than 30mpg is do-able, certainly, is just not feasible in a modern roadster.
The last link is a bit of an exaggeration, 25mpg on a T is tough, but is feasible and that is a hundred year old technology.
A Tesla would, turn heads and get great mileage, if you are going to go,. go big.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i is rated at 28mpg highway. The Corvette Convertible is rated at 26mpg highway but owners of Corvettes typically say they get closer to 28mpg highway as well (I know several people who own C6 Corvettes - they're geared really tall in 6th gear for better economy). 28mpg is probably about as close as you're going to get in a "sleek" looking 2-seat convertible.
If you REALLY have to have 30+mpg and want a convertible, the Mustang V6 convertible is rated at 30mpg highway (and the newest V6 has over 300hp so it's certainly no dog...) and something like a Mini Cooper S Convertible is rated around 36mpg highway, but neither car exactly fits with your 2-seat thing or into my definition of "sleek"; however both are still fun cars for the money (and a lot cheaper than your other choices) and are certainly not "bad" looking cars IMO.

Since you're looking at MB's and BMW's...I'm guessing money is not a issue. I would suggest the Ford Mustang. The 6 cylinder version gets 31 mpg on the highway. Very stylish too of course.

My personal favorite the Jetta TDI, stylish, nicely priced.41 mpg on the highway with a very respectable 34 mpg for combined highway and city driving. It has been redesigned for 2011, but if you are looking to buy used, they are priced nicely, and overall are an attractive car, German, and can fit in with other sports sedans. (note: TDI is not yet available for 2011, but you can buy used)
The Mini Cooper would be another option.
For 2 door sports cars, Tesla Roster, Electric

What about the Volkswagen GTI with a Diesel? I had a 1999 Jetta TDI - Diesel, good pickup, and 45 MPG.

Just be sure it’s American or European because the quality of Japanese and Korean cars has been going down hill faster than a run-away train in recent years so avoid anything from Japan or Korea, they have high repair costs and often need to have parts ordered instead of being in stock like American cars will and that will leave you with nothing to drive while you wait for ordered parts to come in. They also don’t last as long as American or European cars. Even the ones “assembled” in America are built with low quality imported Japanese parts.
That fact being said I suggest a Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Solstice, Corvette or Ford Mustang for sports cars.
Chevy Cruz, Chevy Cobalt, Chevy Malibu, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta or Ford Fusion for practical cars.
Cadillac, Buick LeSabre Buick Park Avenue or a Lincoln for comfort and luxury.
Jeep Liberty or Jeep Cherokee for off road fun.
If you prefer an imported car go with Mercedes, Audi, Vauxhall or VW they will be a LOT more reliable than Japanese or Korean.
Signed, The Raven
