HDMI audio over HDMI to DVI cable?

I have a nice shielded, gold plated HDMI to DVI cable that I've been using without caring about HDMI audio. Now I plan on getting a new TV that supports HDMI rather than DVI. So I was wondering, would a DVI to HDMI adapter (making both ends HDMI) support audio or would I need a solid HDMI cable? I'd prefer to continue using the nice cable over a new cheapo one or having to buy a new $50+ gold plated HDMI cable to get comparable quality from the new cable. (Yes, plating helps, shielding does not help enough at this length to really matter, but it's nice to have the little extra.)

I'm not going to spend $30 on the adapter to find I could have just bought a new $50 cable and been done with it all. So does the DVI section make it not work, or would anything know the difference since it is running over HDMI the entire time since DVI and HDMI are the same minus the audio (and new things in 1.4a, but I have nothing supporting 1.4a so that is unimportant)

Update:

As I said, the distance is too short for shielding to matter but I would rather use my cable since it does have it. I also addressed DVI not carrying audio while HDMI does. Cheap cables (sub $30) do look noticeably worse than the $30+ cables, on anything over about 3ft. Gold plating does help clean up everything on larger screens and longer cables. So please ignore prices here, ignore the shielding, and ignore the plating for the question purposes. The important thing is, would adapted HDMI work? Plating and shielding is an after thought dependent on whether or not I need a new cable.

DVI does not carry audio. The benefits of extra shielding are negligible at short to medium lengths for HDMI cables because the signal is DIGITAL, not analog, so the cheap cables will work just as well as the expensive ones.

It should still work for video. If at ANY LENGTH of the cable there is DVI instead of HDMI (including an adapter), then you will not get sound. For audio to be transmitted, it has to be straight HDMI the whole way.
