Go to autozone or similar auto help store. Get the check engine codes for the car, they check that for free and will give you the exact codes and tell you a possibility of what it is. Don't take it word for word as every car is different. Get the codes, contact a chevy dealer and ask them what those codes mean or get a reference manual for those codes online or in a chevy handbook.

At this point it would be like a shot in the dark. First thing to do is find out why the CEL is on and get the codes pulled. Then come back and post the codes. Then we can help you. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.

Flashing CEL is a realtime misfire. Have the code read and it will tell you which cylinder is missing. Could be the gapping of the spark plugs or a bad coil pack. Could be a dirty MAF sensor, so many things. If you keep driving it while flashing, there is a danger of damaging the cat.

i have a cavalier myself. your problem is that you own a cavalier. they are all rather trashy. mine is held together by zip ties and duct tape.
