Referring to Cell Division and Reproduction, what does "2^n" mean?
n = the number of different kinds of chromosomes in a cell, and 2n (the diploid number) indicates that the cell has two of each kind of chromosome, but I'm not sure what 2^n (n should be superscript) means.

2^n is the number of combinations that can be made with the chromosomes available.

The maternal gamete donates a set of n chromosomes as does the paternal gamete.
These are the homologous pairs a person inherits but remixes before passing them on to the next generation.
The number of remixes is the number of possible combination of maternal mixed with paternal in each gamete or the 2^n where the n = chromosomes in the haploid genome.
