Am I in any legal trouble?

I work for a retail store and was interrogated by the store's security because I let my friend use my employee discount the other day. Plus, throughout my time working there I gave people small discounts and the people weren't friends or family just angry customers. They were angry customers who yelled at me because their coupons didn't work so I gave them the discounts anyway without manager approval. They were little discounts but the total discounts added up to $1,000. So I "gave away" $1,000 within 6 months.

I didn't mean to give away money nor did I intend to steal from the store. I was simply being nice and making sure every customer was happy. Now I'm suspended from work until they further investigate the situation. I honestly don't care if I get fired, I hate my crappy job so being fired won't be so bad. But I'm worried if they have me arrested or sue me or something. Is there any possibility for taking me to jail? They didn't escort me out of the store, they just said "clock out and go home".

Update:

I didn't give one customer a $1,000 discount. Thats the total discount I gave to all of my customers within a 6 month period. I did not offer lower prices, I simply honored coupons that is all.

Update 2:

To the person who called me a thief. I was simply honoring coupons to angry and unsatisfied customers. I was providing good customer service by making customers happy and why would I want them to be happy? Because I want them to come back and make more money for my employer. I stole money from my employer? How is that true? Do I benefit from doing that? No, I get no extra money from that. I was keeping the best interest of my employer and the customers in mind I had no idea that I was doing anything wrong until today. And how do you know if I have any remorse or not?? I kept apologizing to my boss I really regret it now I thought I was doing good about keeping the customers happy, all of my customers keep coming back and buy more and more. I brought my employer $12,000 this MONTH. So how am I a thief??

You will probably be fired. Letting your friend use your employee discount is illegal. I suppose you could also be criminally charged for that. If it didn't involve a lot of money, it would probably be either a ticket or a misdemeanor. You would probably not go to jail, but it is possible that you could be fined and/or placed on probabion.

I don't think they can sue you for honoring the coupons because you were not actually stealing from them. Employers generally cannot sue employees, but they can fire them.

You are not a thief. However, giving discounts without proper authorization costs money to the company. I'm sure there are various reasons why their coupons do not work and who's to take responsibility for that?

By the little discounts that you give out, how do you know whether each case is genuine and these people are just taking advantage of your goodwill.

You have definitely violated company regulations instead of going through proper company channels to resolve the situation.

By the employee discount, the definition is vague and depends on the company's interpretation. You can purchase the item and have your friend reimburse you. The company can't do anything about it unless it is stated clearly in your employment contract.

do you know how many people would love to have that "crappy" job?

they may expect restitution and if you fail to repay them they may take this to court...

highly unlikely you would end up in jail, however you now have to find a way to explain to potential employers why you were fired....

you are now a thief, you stole from your employer, you have shown NO remorse and these facts are going to be held against you in the future.

YOU have made the prospect of finding anything but a crappy job very slim...........

It's possible. It'll depend on what evidence they have and the state where you live. I know when I was a retail manager we had all of our employees sign an affidavit when they were hired that stated something like "I understand that my employee discount is for my use only." If they have that document and can prove that you use it for others, then they may have grounds for legal action.

It's very unlikely that they take the time to pursue you for this. They have better things to do and the likelihood that they get money out of you will be perceived as slim.

I wouldn't worry about the consequences beyond loss of job.

You weren't actually stealing so it's not really a crime, it's just against policy.

your boss could probably take you to "small claims court" to get back the $1000 you gave away. just so you know, what you did is likely to hurt your chances of getting a future job of any kind. i doubt you'd go to jail over this, but you can be sued.
