Can I still use my barbecue if it got a hole burned into it?
In summer, we had a small grease fire under the bottom of our barbecue, and it put a hole in part of the base. (Propane bbq). My husband is concerned that it might be toxic if we continue to cook on it, possibly giving off fumes. Is it still safe to use or should we not be using it?
Note - the hole is not where the propane is - it is actually the bbq itself (in case that wasn't clear)

Gas installation code states that any appliance that has been subjected to fire or explosion shall not be used until it has been inspected by a qualified person and deemed to be safe to use.
You need to have it inspected by a qualified technician before you use it again. If the burner and gas valve train are undamaged it might be OK to use. But if it got hot enough to melt the casing of the unit, then the valves etc probably got pretty hot!
Are you sure it was hole burnt through the casing? There are holes pre drilled in there usually to ventillate the case and allow air in to fuel the burner. It sounds odd that it burnt a single hole in there. If it did get that hot the casing would usually be warped and badly damaged.
If we are talking about a cheapy $100 grill, I would suggest you chuck it in the trash and get a new one. You will spend as much getting it inspected as you could buy a new one for. But if it is a high end model like a Ducane or something worth $1000 bucks, I would have it looked at. It might still be OK to use.
