What causes the pinging noise in car when accelerating?

I own a 2002 Kia Rio, recently ,my car has been making a pinging noise when i accelerate, the mechanic told me that i need to do a fuel injection treatment and change spark plugs..

He said that its a timing problem and that if i don't do it i might end up blowing my engine, i want to know that if i do the fuel injection treatment and change spark plugs, will the pinging noise subside or will it continue to happen and can you suggest what i should do so that the problem does not happen again

Thanks

Joe

I almost voted for Everything but no.

Pinging is caused by pre-detonation, which can be cause by timing being advanced too far. But since modern cars' timing is controlled the computer, it's highly unlikely you have a timing issue. What's more probably is that the spark plugs are worn out and need to be replaced. Adding fuel treatment will not do anything to help.

    Engine Pinging

Ping is caused by - Overheating or over-compression of the cylinders that is causing pre-detonation, which can be cause by timing being advanced too far, or a malfunctioning knock sensor, build up of carbon on the heads or pistons, or a combination of all of the above. If its a carbon issue, you are better off using a top engine clean system, not an injector cleaning solution. Its not strong enough. You should verify what the cause is first and address it. Running higher octane gas will usually remedy the knock noise, but if its a problem with anything I mentioned above, it will only mask the problem, which will get worse in time. and for those who are confused at thae over compression and overheating that I mentioned, you will also find in the first paragraph in this article below.....

This pinging is detonation and can dmage the engine. Common causes are regular gas in an engine which requires premium, excessively advanced timing or stuck egr valve. The last should be checked by locating the valve and feeling whether it moves when the engine is accelerated.

Does the sound accelerate as you go even faster? Is your oil low?

Does it make the noise if you just rev the engine but do NOT go into gear?

My Volvo makes a bit of "clicking" sound when idling when the oil is a bit low.

Most "fuel injection treatment" consist of putting a can of "fuel treatment" into the gas tank. You can do that yourself. Buy a can/bottle and wait till gas tank's almost empty. When you fill up, put the can into the tank, THEN fill with gas. Drive as usual. Voila, "treatment".

As for changing spark plugs... When's the last time it's done? Spark plugs are usually good for 10s of thousands of miles, perhaps longer. And no, I doubt it'll fix "pinging". Bad spark plugs would make your engine run funny, lack of power, not responding much to throttle, bad gas mileage, and so on, but pinging noise? That's stretching it.

I think your mechanic is a bit fishy. I would want a second opinion... elsewhere.

this is an issue that is related to timing, and possibly octane rating for a high performance engine, (like one designed to run on premium. The most common issues is crappy gas, and incorrect timing. The first thing I would change is the fuel, run a tank of premium, from another vendor. and check the tune up parts in your car. if its been awhile, tune it up using quality parts. and set the timing correctly. The issue with the fuel injection is this, cheap crappy fuel, has contaminants, including water, and over time can leave hardened deposits in areas that have small orifices like fuel injectors. Over in the usa I use chevron super unleaded, this has techron, a fuel system cleaner, its best to keep the injection system clean from the beginning, Mechanics make a ton of money cleaning crap out of fuel injection systems. You can buy techron at an auto supply store, dump it in the tank, and fil it up with good quality gas, put clean oil in the car (oil is clear when new, if you can see the lines on your dipstick, its clean, if you cannot read the lines through the oil, its dirty.

use a better grade of gas as well as buy you gas from another source it sounds like engine detonation being you car timing is computer controlled it is most likely the gas as the timing should not be off.

    Hi

Put a higher grade of gas in it. Your area may have some tired gas.

ah, I see you have the machine that goes "ping!"
