Why do people bid more than retail value for something on Ebay instead of buying online from the store?
I have been watching some electronic items on Ebay, and people are bidding way above retail value on easy to find items. These items can be purchased online from places such as WalMart, Toys R Us and Best Buy at retail price with little to no shipping. So why would someone be willing to over pay for an item on Ebay and pay outrageous shipping charges rather than ordering directly from the store? Stores have return policies, while many Ebay sellers do not accept returns, even if the item is defective. I realize that stores charge sales tax while many Ebay sellers do not, but the cost of sales tax is often insignificant when compared to what was paid for the item.
Are people just stupid or am I missing something?

The answer is yes. Some sellers offer the option of "Buy it Now," usually you'll find it on the same page as the Bidding. If there isn't and the item for sale is what desperately want, then I suggest contacting the seller about negotiating a price.

When items are out of stock in some areas, or hard to find on vendors online, this increase in demand and lack of supply cause the price for real available goods on sites like ebay, to be higher than normal.
If a big vendor your comfortable with is all on backorder for the specific item/color/options one wants, then they may be more comfortable with a reputable ebay seller than random website that may or may not take paypal.
I know this is 4 years old, but there are no good answers, and I got on yahoo specifically to complain about bad answers and saw this lol.

1. People bid more than retail price by mistake.
2. These people are not really buyers, they are planted by some vested interest to block deal. They just bid and but do never buy. Some times this tactics is applied to enhance price of item in future auctions by creating artificial shortage.

adding to others' guesses, could be:
-item out of stock at retailer
-buyer has no means to pay except through ebay
-international buyer to whom the retailer wont ship

That's a good question. My idea is that it's the thrill of knowing you've won something. That's the best I've been able to come up with. Good luck!

Their perception on money is way off.I'm just the opposite. If i want something bad enough,I will look for it through the stores and online. If I have to save up for it,so be it.
