My wife has a barbecue sauce recipe that she wants to use as the base of a business. Her problem is lack of investment capitol. She would like to start by just making up some batches and canning them as she would for home consumption having some simple labels printed and selling on line. We need advice on two fronts and if you see other issues please advise. Question one is the issue of the legality of her plan Can she make a product for sale at home? Whats the best way to ship the product we need economy and reliability? One last question home canning involves glass jars how do I possible locate an alternative from a commercial packaging provider?

Go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE counselor. They will guide you through the process.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide and is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 350 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 13,000 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

You can legally produce from home. The city does not want large trucks coming and going from your home. Box up the sauce bottles and take them to be shipped. Probably a large trucking company will be happy to help you.

There is no alternative to the glass jars. You need dependable, clean jars. That means a glass supplier.

Henry is right. SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) is a great start. In general you will be required to attend a reasonably priced seminar on starting your own business, which is fantastic. It will give you written information from market analysis, self evaluation, legal structure, financing, and more. After attending the seminar, you can set up one-on-one counseling, in the subject area of your choice, for free. I highly recommend it.
