Are Senior Citizens concerned with their animals' welfare?
Most responsible pet owners keep their pets indoors in the winter, or all the time in a cat's case, right?
Our furnace has not been working. The landlord said he'd be out today to fix it. Last night we kept one kerosene heater and one space heater in the living room, and a second space heater in the bedroom, there's plastic on all the windows, and yet it was still very cold. Callie Lou snuggled up on the bed between us, covered by a heavy towel. We were all cold, but survived the night. I hate to think of anybody having to be outside, let alone our animal friends.

Our pets are house pets. They stay in except for bathroom breaks. Well, except for the older cat. She uses the litter box all the time. I would never leave an animal outside all of the time! (Our rescued tom still needs to have the "freedom" to go out sometimes, but he has been quite happily spending these cold nights indoors for the past couple of weeks!)
Sorry to hear about the furnace. Did he get it fixed today? He CAN NOT leave you in an unheated house in the middle of winter! It is against the law. The LEAST he is liable for is to put you up in a hotel until he gets the furnace fixed--all at his own expense!
I found this.....Allows a tenant, under certain circumstances and after giving a landlord 14 days' notice, to deduct one-half month's rent or up to $300 (whichever is greater) for repair of code violations when a landlord neglects property. This can be done once a year.

I personally feel that in general we fail our elderly. But you have a point. You don't see people like Pamela Anderson protesting nursing homes like she did KFC. But groups like PETA are garbage anyway. They pretend to care so much about animals, meanwhile they murder tens of thousands of animals a year. At least for the most part we don't slaughter our elderly the way PETA does to those poor animals. But I do think you are right. People are more concerned with the welfare of animals than they are the welfare of an older human being.

Well I'll be checking on here tomorrow to make sure it's been fixed. Or somebody should have a talk with your landlord! Can you get a milk house heater and close up into one room? Electric blanket?
Mine are inside. Dairy farmers by us have cats in their barn. I think they're fine. They have plenty to eat and drink, and warm places out of the wind to be.
Mr GJ, hoping to hear better news about you too. Wish I could take your cats.
Years ago we ran out of propane and spent a cold night. All six of us in one bed. The kids think it's a fun memory now. But I still feel how upset and afraid I was, wondering how cold it would get that night.

No, there are many people ....including senior citizens....who will leave animals outside regardless of how hot or how cold it is. It is disgusting and animal cruelty and they should never be allowed to own an animal again!
PS.. It is more than a little dangerous....in fact, it is very dangerous indeed....to use a kerosene heater inside. You could probably be evicted for doing it...and it is probably against all the fire codes in your city.
I managed to burn half my house down using one when I was a young bride.

The animals that live with me come in to bed every night, even my sweet pit bull. She spends most of the day outside, but she is protected and has shelter. At night after all the other pets are secure, she comes in and goes directly to her secure crate in my bedroom and is cozy and warm all night,
I crack my garage door, and leave some blankets around, food and water for the feral cats I try to help. Boy I bet they were glad last night!
Mr. GJ, that is so sad!

I care for animals and care even more for my fellow human beings. Is there no place where you can take shelter until the furnace has been repaired? Please call your city or village and see if they can help. Perhaps a church in your neighborhood could open their doors to you or put you in touch with a member who will make room for you and your animals. At this time, most of us are aware of our Christian duty and do not want to hear that you have been told that, "there is no room at the inn."

I enjoy winter but want to be warm at least in my house. It must be terrible to be cold even in bed. We leave the shed open for our 6 cats so they can find a warmer place to stay at night. Our dogs have 2 dog houses in their pen and the horses have a large shelter to stand under during cold rain. We do the best we can for them because we love them. The dogs are fed twice a day in winter and the cats have a self-feeder on the deck.Poppy

On the farm we had outside animals that could get shelter in the barn. In town I have an indoor-outdoor cat. She is smart. She won't go outside if there is any snow to be seen!
Yes, I treat her well. And always made sure the outside animals were treated with good shelter and food/water.
