Why do trolls spend all their time trying to get a rise out of folks? Is it because they get some kind of sadistic kick out offending people or is it because they are so uneducated that they truly cannot come up with legitimate questions?

The uneducated thing is not always the case: *sometimes* trolling can be incredibly witty.

Some do it for kicks, but there are those who actually are trying to make a legit point & teach others how badly they come off....
At least I hope that's what some of them are up to...

Both for many of them.Most of the mean-spirited theists asking insulting questions seem ignorant.Uneducated is is too nice a word for them,imo.
